Around the NHL - Part XLV (Playoffs edition)

I'm going to float something here that a lot of people are going to push against. When Blake Wheeler was signed here I was super against it for a lot of reasons. I thought he would get a bigger role than he should and that it would get in the way of some of the younger players and that did happen until he got hurt, but the other issue I had was he is a locker room cancer.

Wheeler is one of the biggest reasons Paul Maurice resigned in Winnipeg. Maurice was done coaching, completely burned out and made peace with the fact he would retire without winning a cup, and then the cats job opened and he was courted and was completely reinvigorated. Maurice didn't just suddenly figure out how to coach, he hit a wall with locker room in Winnipeg and Wheeler was the leader of that room. Wheeler also had numerous conflicts with other players over the years that left the keys and went on to contribute to other good teams. The next jets coach calls the players out in the media after a playoff implosion and Wheeler fights back in the media on this even on his way out of the organization. Wheeler leaves and the players in winnepeg start to figure things out as a group over the next couple of years (ignore playoff helly issues). Wheeler comes here and the locker room cancer stuff takes a bigger step in nyr.

I'm not putting the nyr room issues all on Wheeler, not by a long shot, but there is a lesson to be learned again that putting a team together is not just about analytics, stats, cap hits, ect. The players are people and there are good hockey players that are cancers to a room and a team. Tht doesn't show up on sheets. Equally there are high character players that sometimes teams keep around or pay extra to bc they help make a better room/culture that brings out the best in the others on the team.

People can call this BS or whatever but it's true with teams like these. These players spend more time together than they do with their families during the season, the character of individuals rubs off on the group. You need to be super cognizant of who you put in your room and be aware of your room is capable of managing certain people/personalities before they rub off on other players in a bad way.
wheeler lead to presidents trophy? i think the room was pretty good last year. they just ran into a buzzsaw. fox injury, not enough talent, defensive suckage.

Maurice said the players run the bench, call out the changes. I wonder how that works.
You want an example of a team and a room that is on the same page, here you go.

They don't need the coach to "motivate" them or drive them. The way that team plays with the constant forecheck and support requires everyone to be on the same page. Not surprising what Maurice said about the bench. They have the right leadership and culture there that doesn't require a coach to babysit the team. I am so jealous of what the cats have build there.

Carolina embarasses themselves as usual. No clue why everyone loves them so much. Team hasn't won shit and their coach is overrated. Hopefully they get swept again

I don't think Brind'amour is overrated. In fact I think he gets the absolute most out of a middling roster. Compare their roster to Florida's. It's not close.

Yeah i guess you have a point. Just sick of seeing people worship Carolina like they won multiple cups or something.

Read a little bit of the Carolina board. Fun read. Really couldn’t happen to a better fanbase (aside from icelanders or NJ).
All that hard work in the regular season to just get outworked and skilled in the 3rd round. This Carolina team isn't going anywhere. If they somehow manage to make it to the finals they aren't beating Dallas or Edmonton.

Every year I suffer 6 months of hockey twitter posting about the Carolina Hurricanes like they’re writing a smut book just for them to get stunted on by any non-cannon fodder playoff team.

If people on this board went back and read their own comments about him when he was a ranger there would be a lot of crow.

Most people here said he was good his first 7 ish games and then was a 3rd pair guy. Now people (not just you) act like it was a career mistake he wasn't resigned when there were literally 30 other teams that also did not sign him to a contract. Guy has blossomed in Florida.

People have no clue the differences of a team that has players that build culture vs players that have no culture. Nate Schmidt told a story that in preseason he tried to make a play during a game and the Panthers player leadership took him aside and said we don't do that stuff here, this is how we play. The players did that. The players control their group and demand consistency in the game that they all play. Consistency like that allows players to find comfort and grow as players. Mikkola for sure has benefitted from being in that culture opposed to the circus here.

And if you watch mikkola now people can rewind and probably see a lot of Miller in a younger mikkola. Again, it would be silly to piss Miller away with his raw talents and gifts to watch him take steps like mikkola somewhere else

I was a fan from the start. I can’t speak for others. First highlight I saw of Mikkola after the trade was him light up Crosby with an open ice hit as a Blue

Pagnotta says CAR asked about Knies instead when the two teams were talking about Rantanen. TOR said no. Says there are whispers that there will be more management/front office changes in TOR.

Says SEA is getting close on making a choice for HC.

Sounds like Ottawa is looking for a top 4 RHD. Pagnotta mentions Rasmus Andersson as a guy to watch. Entering final yr of contract. Says if the negotiations don't go well, CGY will try to move him around the draft.

Seems like Pagnotta thinks TOR could explore a Kreider trade. Seems more speculation than some solid rumor he's heard though.
