Around the NHL - Part XLV (Playoffs edition)

In this instance? Yeah.

It's happened with several guys though. Pionk, Howden, Buchnevich (who to his credit, had a really strong series all together but people only brought him up the one game he actually scored), Lindgren that one game where he didn't completely get completely stomped, etc.

The guy played 46 minutes and had 3 assists playing/excelling in a role he wasn't cast for in a game 7. I think there are some well deserved accolades there.

And, honestly, judging over the last 5-6 years I'm not sure he's worse than Trouba over that period. Probably better.

In retrospect, would you rather have had Trouba or Pionk & a 1st?

Not a difficult decision for me.

I would have kept the first and moved him separately.

He isn’t good and a single game doesn’t really change that. There’s an overwhelming body of work that preceded last night that supports that.

He's a serviceable 4D that's better than Trouba and you're rewriting something that didn't happen.

Trouba for Pionk and a 1st did happen. Revisiting that, I wouldn't have made that trade. Also, the Rangers were pretty thin on RD in 2019 as they didn't know what they had in Fox yet. They wouldn't have just moved him.

So, let me get this straight, the whole league could have a "mediocre offensive D who ideally slots in as a #4" basically for free and they've all taken a pass on that?

That doesn't sound quite right.

I could see saying that Jones has similarities to Pionk but, let's be honest, Jones can't hold Pionk's socks at this point.
Pionk has hit free agency zero times.

Don't.

It was a nothing player for a nothing player six years ago.

Yes because he sighed a lucrative contract. Not sure how this strengthens your argument.
It's not about strengthening anybody's argument. You said the whole league passed on him (or that I implied the whole league passed on him) which nobody ever did.

The pick was #20 so here's what we missed.

The only guy that's all that meaningful is Jackson LaCombe and I think it's a stretch that we take him at 20.

The trade deserved to be criticized at the time, which I've done, many times. Looking back, I don't think it moves Rangers history an inch.

Jets win. Adam Lowry. Now thats a real hockey player.
I'm happy for the Jets. To win the Presidents Trophy but lose in the first round again after their recent history of playoff losses would've been a kick to the stomach. The franchise had trouble selling tickets not long ago. Who knows how that fan base would've reacted if they had lost.

I think my favorite scenario right now would be Dallas winning the whole thing while taking out Carolina in the Finals.

The ultimate Rantanen revenge tour.
Man, that would be really hard to swallow for Carolina.

Colorado had injuries and it was the first round so who knows anyway.

If Carolina makes the Finals without Rantanen and loses to him, they're gonna have to live with literally trading the Stanley Cup. Couldn't happen to a nicer team.

Lucky for them, Florida is gonna beat them blindfolded like they've done before.

They're going to struggle to get by the Caps.

Trouba single handedly losing the ECF twice doesn't move you an inch?

THE WHOLE LEAGUE PASSED ON ZAC JONES. Not Pionk.

(You said they're essentially the same player - see below)

Wake me when Zac Jones has a single season as good as any of Pionk's playing 21+ mins a night all situations farting out 30+ points a year in his sleep.
You: "You're describing Zac Jones if he played a lot."

We'll never know.

You said it was the draft pick that bothered you.

The whole trade bothers me in retrospect. I think Pionk and Trouba are interchangeable (obviously different players with different strengths) and the pick (although probably turns out to be nothing) is an add to that - as is/was Trouba's contract.

If you could either do it again or not, I'd choose not.
