Around the NHL - Part XLV (Playoffs edition)

I meant the terrible defensive coverage, not the goaltending.
That too lol. I just saw the puck go off the goalie 2x and in. Just kinda left me rolling my eyes and feeling for the guy. Seems like something that would happen to Connor.

Watching these two teams, Stars-Avs, it’s painfully apparent that we don’t play fast enough.
Exactly why it wasn’t worth being a buyer or getting Miller. If you’re not in a position to compete with the best, there’s no point in getting that little extra. Hopefully Sully turns things around.

You don't need a top goalie to win a cup. You do need good goaltending to win the cup (Colorado in 2022 is the outlier). And when you pay a good goalie, you are more likely to get that good goaltending.

I would much rather pay Shesterkin that 11.5M dollars, if the alternative is the Edmonton model and try to hope that a guy like Pickard or Skinner gets hot. Because more likely than not, they will not get hot and it will cost them a series.

Obviously, ideally you find something in the middle. A good goalie for 6-7M dollars is starting to be the norm now.
Way easier to find the “good enough” goalie than any of the numerous elite forwards and defenders you need.

it was obvious watching the Islanders play the Preds too. No team is as slow as us.

If you want to say that no team plays slower I might be able to buy that but thats even hard to quantify with out really watching a shit ton of other teams.

What happened? Felt like not that long ago Dallas was controlling this. They had a great start. Killed that double minor. Even in the second they started well. Did the wheels just fall off? Missing Miro too much?

It’s also about the game style: dump and chase and north-south hockey seem faster than east-west even if the players are skating at the same speed. I suppose speed is somewhat ambiguous — the speed of play vs the speed of the players.

Yeah I mean look at Vegas.

That team isn't fast but they get shit done.

NYR for years have looked like a team with out a plan or at least, with out buy in of said plan. Whooollle lot of freelancing and when you aren't on the same page/ doing what ever the f*** they want, it looks janky AF.

That and when you have 1 (occasionally 2) defensemen who can reliably move the puck.
