Around the NHL: Part XLIV 2025)

Imagine being Ilya Sorokin the next 2 nights, trying to get yourself to sleep.

So after all the histrionics, Kakko has scored

1 point per 28 minutes on ice with NYR this season
1 point per 27 minutes on the ice with Seattle.

Last season, a down year, he scores 1 point per 42 minutes.

His good year, where he hit 40 points, he scores 1 point per 31 minutes.

The guy is an unspectacular middle 6 winger. Not a bad hockey player! But I'd be shocked if he ever turned into a bona fide offensive option.
And so far Borgen has sucked lmao

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but it appeared to me that after playing KK on the PP1 for months the Seattle coach may have taken KK off the PP1 in the last 2 games.
He was not on PP1 for months. I looked pretty often and it was usually some combination of Beniers, Stephenson, Eberle, Bjorkstrand, McCann, Wright

Kakko is a useful example of the nature/nurture debate proven if you’re a nurture guy - treat a drafted player like a middle/bottom 6 forward by giving them middle/bottom 6 minutes, middle/bottom 6 opportunities and you create a middle/bottom 6 player.

Kakko has less points than bustfreniere in the same amount of minutes/game for a last place team. The guys stinks .

Bossy would've had over a thousand in the same amount of games. He was the best IMHO.
Fair. I never saw bossy play in person though. Wasnt alive yet. But part of being the best is being able to be in the games and Ovechkin has. And would have a thousand too without the lock and covid i think.

I hated Bossy so much as a kid. He had every shot (snapper, wrister, hard slap shot, and dekes). His forearms looked like Popeyes. Guy was an insane sniper. As a NYR fan it was so annoying. He was 100% against fighting but he would keep scoring no matter how bad a beating he took from guys like Tiger Williams.

Mario was also a great goal scorer but did more of his goals via great hands closer to the net.

Crazy question I just asked myself. How many times have I seen Ovie shoot in the offensive zone. Now how many times have I seen Ovie pass in the offensive zone? ☺️

And yet the 8 yrs bossy and gretzky were in the league at the same time, gretzky had a higher gpg with roughly the same amount of games played.

Bossy played 10 yrs, in gretxkys first 10 years he still had a higher GPG than bossy.

Its amazing how under rated gretzky actually is.

I can't think of a time he expressed anything representing a top line level of skill -- like, ever. Ever. Not a deke, not an inside out gaining the blue line, nothing. Not even discussing goals which are ~all net front stuff.

There are opportunities to express skill regardless of your deployment and he's *always* played like a Western Canadian 3rd liner who uses size to shield rather than to hit. Dude's a plugger because he plays like a plugger.

Think about Marian Gaborik. If you deployed him on the 3rd line he'd..... still play like Marian Gaborik, yanno? I don't think you unlock a top line skill forward on Kakko just by playing him more.

How about GPG over their careers? Mike Bossy is highest in NHL history.

2nd is Gretzky right? No, it's Lemiuex.
Gretzky next? Nope. "Modern NHL" - Bure, Matthews, Ovechkin and then Gretzky.

I'll say this - Gretzky's back issues did bring his goal production down, for sure.

But so did Bossy's.

I do not know which stats say what but as much as I hated to admit it Bossy was that special as a goal scorer. Gretz was probably the best player of all time but Bossy was probably the best pure goal scorer I ever saw play. He just had incredible sniper ability. Natural goal scoring instincts. I never would have admitted that from 1978 till around 2000. It was so annoying lol :D
