Around the NHL: Part XLIV 2025)

Columbus is going to lose, at least. But yeah, Montreal is going to be a problem. Their schedule is much easier.

NYR shouldnt even be in the race , season has been over since December
They just needed to have won 2 of the 9 games we lost in our last 15 games. Those are just from last month. Even if those two wins were from the 3 OTLs, we'd at least be tied with MTL. Flip two regulation wins, we're in thick of it. Flip the game vs OTT (+1 more) and we'd be 1 point behind them.

The Rangers shouldn't be in the race with the way they've been playing. I agree with that but your timeline is hyperbole.

Makar 30 goals and 90 points in 77 games. 90 points in back to back seasons.

Unreal for a goddamn D-man.

If you took away all his PP points, he'd still have 10+ more points than Laf. LOL.

He is just at an elite level. People got mad at me when I said the 4 nations tourny opened my eyes but it did. There is just an elite level of players that we do not have. We have several good strong all star possible players but its debatable if we have a top 20 player.

I mean, this season no.

Panarin, Fox, and Shesty have all been top 10 players at some point in their careers

Also Makar didn’t really stand out to me during the 4 Nations.

What really sets players like McDavid MaKar and McKinnon apart is the ability to have Panarin's playmaking/vision combined with exceptional skating ability and the talent to do what the top players in the league do 'on the dribble' as they say in association football.

Makar is always going to have a higher potential upside because no matter how good Fox is, he will never be able to make the same sort of space for himself on the ice because of footspeed.

That's okay, you don't need the best player in the NHL to win the cup. But it does mean you can't assume players like Panarin or Fox will get you there by themselves. They clearly won't.

I understand your perspective but I'm not sure about that. Some of their best years were the same years. I do not know that we had 3 of the NHLs top 10 players.

Makar is in that elite level I mentioned but there were others in the 4 nations. I just saw the difference between good, great and elite.

There are the top 20-100 player lists put out yearly. What years would you say they were top 10 and where would you say they are now?

I'd put Panarin top 10 last year and 2019-20

Igor obviously top 10 his Vezina year.

Fox his Norris year and probably his runner up years too.

They've all fallen off a cliff this season but the whole team has, i think Fox and Igor can bounce back. Panarin has been better than both this season but not close to where he was last year and given his age i doubt he reaches that level again.

They're not McDavid or Mackinnon but they are a special breed, and you don't need a McDavid or MacKinnon to win a cup obv

But none of our skaters are capable of truly taking over a game, especially in the playoffs. Fox hasn't shown that he can, Panarin clearly hasn't shown that. The only performance we've had in the last 30 years was Kreider's hat trick. It's the same concept we had when Hank was here, hope & pray our goalie can steal a game or the series for us. That's not realistic.

The Rongo Meta is all wrong

That is fair. I do not agree with top 10 for Fox in some of his years and I'm not sure if I agree with Shesty either but I can understand your case for them. I"d have them top 15 but maybe not top 10.

You do not need a McDavid or MacKinnon to win a cup but it certainly helps to have top 10 players imo. The Gretzkys, Marios, Orrs, Crosbys, Jagrs, Messiers, Coffeys, Yzermens, Sakics, Bossys, Lafluers, etc usually have their share of cups. McDavid is more the outlier so far.
