Sometimes that happens for vets. Ovie looked to be declining hard and out of shape in some seasons. but he has bounced back in other seasons. Can Zib and CK bounce back? Only time will tell.

opens up cap space for Philly parting ways with Farabee and the $5M per over the next 3 years, plus the $3.5-$4M+ they'd have to give Frost this summer for a long term deal (much like we were due for with Kakko).

Yes, but testing is not serious in almost any sport.

I think Nate Schmidt might be the last player to test positive, maybe in 2017 or 2018. Is it reasonable to think no NHL player has used PEDs (performance-enhancing drugs) since Schmidt?

AS (anabolic steroids) first came to be in I believe the early 1940s and spread into elite sport in the 1950s. By the '90s, they’re all over and are much more difficult to detect. The massive change in Barry Bonds from his first 6 seasons to later career 6 seasons, for instance:

No sane person at that time thought the .270, 24 HRs a season Bonds of his early 20s naturally morphed into the .328, 49 HRs a season Bonds of his late 30s. But the reality is, by the time Bonds became this new player, PEDs were commonplace in high school and more so at the collegiate level.

The pressure to use them at the pro level is more intense.

Isn’t that largely expected when using or not using could change an athlete’s salary by many millions a year or for some be the difference between playing pro or not?

I don’t think any pro sport tests with much sincere intent to identify or stop PEDs. Why would they?

The drive for big money is there from the athletes up to the owners.

To quote Dr. Charles Yesalis, one of the top researchers on this matter: “The king is the money involved. Combine the availability of these drugs with the loopholes in testing – the loopholes are so big, I could drive an M1 Abrams Tank through it, in total darkness, without night vision on, and not scrape it. Drug testing is a facade. It's only to keep politicians away and give fans plausible deniability.”

So, yes, there is "testing" in the NHL. But I don't foresee serious testing happening any time soon, in any sport.
