Rangers are better off being the:

2nd wild card and facing the Capitals, or

3rd in the Metro, surpassing the Devils, and facing the Hurricanes

Caps aren’t for real and the Hurricanes massively blew the trade deadline. Pretty easy path to winning the first round in either scenario.

Don’t want to play Florida, Tampa, or Toronto (to a lesser extent) in the first round.
