Is he a good coach though? He never got one iota more out of the Leafs than their talent would carry them.
I think the roster is just built terribly for the playoffs, but still, it's not like they've overachieved at any point in his time there. Uber skilled forwards that pick teams apart in the regular season, but then have year after year of disappointing playoffs'.
Might have very little to do with Keefe, but there's still enough questions around that team that there should also be doubts about him.
One could argue they definitely overachieved during the RS during his tenure, when you look at what their D-corps and goaltending has looked like. Also, the fact that their star players shrink in big games is hardly on him. One could say that D-corps has been so bad that no wonder their offence dries up in the post season, but that's not on Sheldon either.
He definitely had his warts, and deserves a ton of blame, especially for their lacklustre special teams in the post season. That's his #1 problem. Other than that, I think he did pretty well considering their flawed roster and the star players ghosting in the playoffs.
I thin if you look at the other options out there, he's certainly the one with the most potential. I think him having his first coaching tenure in Toronto is going to help him so much when he goes to New Jersey, where he can probably coach more to his preferred style instead of having to walk the thin line under the microscope of Toronto media and Shanahan who probably called him every time he publicly criticised his players.
