Around the NHL - Part 1 [MOD: Other Team News Goes Here]

People keep saying. Oh he played with Kane and now Ovi. If he didn't have the elite hockey IQ and being a very good passer, he wouldn't be playing on the top PP units and scoring and putting up points.
You are right, his skating was what was holding him back and we didn't have the talent to surround him that could make up for that sort of deficiency. He's probably also improved himself and his already good skills likely also further improved so his weak points aren't a complete anchor.

Strome was seen as a "project" in the beginning.

It only took three teams and a half dozen head coaches over ten years before the "project" started producing.

I'm actually happy to see that he's finally living up to his potential and draft position pedigree. I just wish his development had gone more quickly, because that means it's likely that he'd still be playing for us. We could use a guy like him right about now.

Certainly.....

But I doubt the fanbase had that kind of patience.

Morgan Geekie:
Does he have to wait until his 27th birthday to become a UFA, July 20, or is it that he has to wait until next season?

A player qualifies for UFA under the age of 27 if they have at least seven seasons of NHL experience. I'm not sure if there's a minimum games played requirement or if a single game counts, but either way, Morgan Geekie only has six seasons in the NHL under his belt. Five if his if his first season doesn't count because he only played two games in the NHL during the 2019-20 season.

PuckPedia seems to agree, giving his contract expiry status as RFA.

Edit: I know draft eligibility is determined by a player turning 18 on or before September 15, but I guess that means for the purposes of UFA eligibility, it's a different date. Since free agency opens on July 1 (barring the weird COVID seasons), maybe that's it.

Kid wouldn't do what was asked of him here, it's that simple.

That's fair to say, and accurate from all accounts I know of. However, what I'd like to point out is that there's an argument to be maid that he wasn't getting the fairest treatment during his time with the Coyotes. An example I can think of is him getting shifted to the wing on the 4th line. Maybe there was something going on behind the scenes that makes it fair to say he deserved to be there, but looking at it through the view I have, which I'll admit is based on incomplete information, it's not a good look.

It went seven games, Dallas was the favorite, so I wouldn't call it a brutal lose. Dallas could easily win the SC this year. The are damn good.

They eliminated Colorado with Robertson and Heiskanen not even playing a single game for them. I've heard that Heiskanen is close and might even start the series (but more likely they wait a couple games on him), but Robertson is further away (someone on the playoff board said games 5-7 as a possibility). They're already really good even with them missing, and they'll be really scary with those two back.

I read that both are day to day.

Yes, last day of June when contracts expire. Boston would need to qualify 1st, go to arbitration, and if it reaches arbitration, they can not trade him and he goes to UFA next year. Geekie does have some leverage and I can see him wanting max term in his new contract.
Doubt he'll get traded, but it's worth watching.

Now if Larkin is available...

Well, Rantanen certainly was motivated. Ironically, that was always one of his issues with the Avs. I loved the reported comment he made after his second goal in last night’s game. Something like, “How do you like me now?” Hopefully, he can keep that fire.

Regardless of the outcome for the Stars, I‘ll be pleased if someone manages to stomp Jamie Benn at some point in the playoffs.

Fair? Life isn’t fair. Seems he was more concerned with doing things his way, than doing what his coaches requested of him.

Would be fun to see him and OEL go at it again, but that wouldn’t be so good for the Leafs.

I haven't checked the Leafs board, but that team needs a major restructuring IMO. They lack heart.
Its really kinda unbelievable that they presently have 4 of the 12 highest paid players in the league and not one of them could muster up the balls to have a game when they are needed for years now. And they continue to get raises every time their contracts are up??? While they are all great players that combination has shown itself to not work.

They went up against a team that shut down an Edmonton team last year n the finals that has as much offensive talent as the Leafs.

Sometimes it simply gets down to how the teams matchup. Florida can just suffocate the hell out of you. Leafs thought getting Ryan "Brutus Beefcake" Reaves would be a difference and he didn't even suit up.
