The vibe around our forward drafting would be a lot rosier in spite of all these numbers if even one of Gauthier/Carlsson/Zegras/McTavish were have a legitimately good year. But they’re not, the only one of our supposed “big 5” that belongs in a top 6 this year is Terry, a fluke 5th rounder.

Carlsson/Gauthier get a pass.

Zegras/McTavish are the ones who needed to take a step forward and their lack of progress is a big reason the team is still so shitty. Idk if I put it on them though, I need to see their progress in a new system.

I do think the forward drafting is an issue though. Or maybe it's a development issue. But something is off.

I think it's pretty evident we could have drafted Bedard and he would be similar to Carlsson in that there would be flashes of brilliance mixed with constant disappointment. And, however good you think he looks in CHI, he would be looking much less good here.

I think Bedard may be a bit less of a dominant player than we think. His linemates aen't good but he isn't elevating them or dominating in spite of them like Crosby and McDavid did in their first years. What do you guys think?

He certainly doesn’t look like a generational player, at least as of yet. Because you’re right, those guys found ways regardless, you didn’t need to make excuses for them and they dominated from the outset pretty much.

Mackinnon’s progression is the classic cautionary tale so plenty of time for CB, but definitely a bit underwhelming so far.

Bedard will probably take some time to reach his potential. He is small and he isn't that fast. Needs to add weight and become faster, which is going to take some time. Maybe they should play him as a winger until his body is ready. Although I see it as a possibility that he becomes a goal scoring winger rather than a center.

in the WJC-20 2022, Mac centered Bedard. iirc, in the WJC-20 2023, Shane Wright center Bedard.

I was hoping to reunite Mac and Bedard if we won the lottery, with the intention of Mac centering Bedard.

CBJ seems to be on a roll with him, winning games. He also has 3p in 4 games, playing 22+ the last two.

He had a back issue before the draft, right? I remember there was some injury that made him risky

He's probably going to end up missing most of the year. An 18 year old who needs back surgery is not one I'd be comfortable taking where he was drafted. Hopefully his body holds up after this, but im wary. This will always be an issue.

Yeah, but these types of back injuries aren't usually caused by outside contact, really. It's more that his own body cannot deal with stress he puts on it internally.

That's a bigger problem, because those stressors are also not likely to change, the disc will never be the same, and his body will start to break down naturally anyway.

He is going to have to be a core-master and be extremely tuned into his body.

Just imagine if the Ducks drafted him, he'd probably miss a whole year.
Back injuries are partly why Getzlaf retired early and he didn't have back issues when he was 18 in 2003. Columbus I think hopes Lindstrom becomes Rick Nash 2.0 for them and there is article already comparing them Lindstrom could become next Nash for Blue Jackets | NHL.com

What happened to Boston and Colorado this season ? I would have expected Boston to be great this year since they added Elias Lindholm but now looking at his stats he's horrible.

Pittsburgh becoming horrible just in time for the McKenna draft in 2026 which will definitely result in them winning the lottery just like Chicago with Bedard.
