I disagree, there were differences in the way those two teams played due to Letang primarily.
System stuff is so overblown. Most teams play similar styles.
Whoa whoa whoa. System is the only way they turned the season around in 2015 (some additional player swappage to guys who would end up being able to play three system helped).
Go watch games, or even extended highlights from 15-16. That team had positioning DOWN and a swarming energy. I don't quite know how they clicked.
It was like the most beautifully executed, aggressive 1-2-2 ever. Ever. Full 5 man coverage. They routinely made teams go ten minutes without a shot on goal. It was bonkers.
The 16-17 team just kinda had the entire defense playing two levels above ability. Some timely goaltending. It was more luck than system by then. You'll notice some of the questions we are asking about this team actually started this year. The success masked most of it.
Last year was total system breakdown...and surprise, the team looked like shit most of the time.
This is is continued. Maybe the guys can't play like that anymore. Maybe the new blood players never could have. Maybe teams just figured out how to counter that style. But you can't tell me the Pens have any structure right now.
