OT: Around the NHL: Final stretch to the playoffs

41 goals at age 39: obviously juicing

20th ppg season at age 37: flintstones vitamins and hard work
Ovechkin is the only generational player in the history of the sport to lose a step at 25 years old, coinciding with the 2010 Olympics. He's also a complete unicorn when it comes to durability given his playstyle. Just throwing it out there.

Yeah, I mean, the team's supplier getting busted literally coincided with his two worst goal-scoring seasons in his physical prime.

Still a great player though.
Wow I totally forgot about that. Lmao.

Even there, the NHL was basically called out for lying about doing any investigation at all.

After the 2010 Olympics Ovechkin had 20 points in 18 games. Prior to them he had 89 in 54, a 134 point pace - by far the best of his career. His next season he barely outscored 40 year old Teemu Selanne being 7th in scoring and the season after that he wasn't even a point per game despite being a 27 year old generational forward.

Moreover, he has never looked the same physically at all since his age 25 season despite being a generational player. That's just weird, man. There's not a single example in hockey you can point to that had that career arc. It's cool that he found a way to score goals with such consistency, but it's definitely weird that he lost his explosiveness just like that. That's like if McDavid lost a step 3 years ago.

That's how I always viewed Ovi- a 1 dimensional hockey player. But damn he does that 1 trick really well.

Ovi certainly the best goal scorer by raw data and when you figure in Quality of Opponents. But he's not even close to being the greatest hockey player.
Just like how I view Adam Oates as the best passer in the history of the league. Doesn't make him the best player either. Obviously goals are more important than assists.
He was certainly one of the best but the best passer is clearly Gretzky, there's just no argument against him. He has more assists then anyone else has points, including a 163 assist season. That was over 2 assists per game. Oates was great but Gretzky stands alone there.

I mean that and his doctor getting busted bringing PEDs into Canada. Not to mention how prevalent they are among Russian athletes. His amazingly quick return from a broken leg. He’s 3rd in the league in goals. That’s the equivalent of Sid having 106 points. A lot of stuff doesn’t add up.

The Icarus documentary blew my mind when it came to doping among Russian Olympians

In 10+ less games than everyone else. Ovi has only played 60 games.

Talking about Ovechkin potentially juicing when he's breaking a record like this seems pretty petty tbh. Not a chance we wouldn't all be soaking up every second of this if he were a Penguin.

That said Sid's still better

cant just be me that found all that rather cringe lol
fair play on the record and all that but all that was just weird

also bothers me how this record has been given so much attention, yet crosby setting the most PPG seasons has been given way less attention

Okay, but Crosby is known for his commitment to fitness and nutrition, and Ovechkin is regularly seen eating Flaming Hot Cheetos with his gut hanging out, so it makes sense that people are suspicious. That being said, I was surprised at how happy I was for Ovechkin today. It's an overwhelming achievement.

Gretzky’s speech started to get a bit bizarre towards the end

Wow so much cope in this thread.

I'm a diehard Pens fan for life and have no interest in seeing the Capitals win hockey games.

But what OV just accomplished is legendary. Seeing fans in here bitch and moan that the record is tainted because he's juicing makes me embarrassed to be part of this fanbase.
It makes me absolutely sick to my stomach! These "people" in this thread should be flat out embarrassed of themselves.

Dude, MOST ALL-TIME GOALS is a significant record. "Most consecutive point-per-game seasons" is not. Again, reading this thread makes me embarrassed to be a Pens fan. Why all the sour grapes? We have 3 Cups to celebrate and Crosby is making a case for the Mt. Rushmore of hockey to expand to 5 spots. Can't we tip our hats at a player passing Wayne frigging Gretzky for most all time goals????

How is it petty? It’s never been more relevant. When has anybody been able to explain his falloff in the middle of his prime?
