This is a horrible move by Vegas. I wonder if this was mandated more from Foley, or if it was truly the decision of their GM.
It is certainly not a definitive read on the situation, but Kelly McCrimmon that made the announcement to the press. I would expect that if this was something mandated by ownership that George McPhee probably would have been the one to come forward with the announcement.

After seeing the clip of McCrimmon saying he felt like "they needed a change", I think it's definitely a panic move by him. They were in good position with Gallant (sure they could have been better) but ultimately if you're in playoff position 3 points off the division lead with a top coach behind the bench and a skilled roster of players, you don't need to make panic moves.

Berube is one of the longest tenured coaches already.

This is because everyone is trying to be like the Blues. Firing coach=success!

(And I read down and see you already said as much)

I truly hope somehow Vegas gets to enjoy those expansion years they missed out on after this decision, but I doubt that is how it shakes out.

Grubauer saw right through the Sharks. Avs looking real sharp in the win.

Looking good against the Sharks isn't exactly a high bar to step over. They've been blown out by the Rangers, Coyotes, Flyers, Blues, Panthers, Lightning, Caps, Jets, Oilers, Nucks, Leafs, Sens, Preds, Knights & Bruins this year. Hell...the Red Wings have even shut-out the Sharks this year. The RED WINGS. The Avs should look dominant against that squad.

I think it’s more the annoying fan base than the actual team, especially now that Subban has left.
Nah, their roster is still awful. Ekholm is the most underrated whiner in the game. Johansen and Watson can f*** off too. f*** them.

My first reaction was that I hope we claim him, but then I looked and remembered he’s 35, and has a $6mil contract this year and next. If he retires, give him a 1-day contract to retire with us and a development coach job, otherwise nooooo thank you.
If they brought him back, maybe he could tussle with Sanford in practice. Apparently what Bortuzzo brought last season didn't last long enough.

We shouldn't underestimate the Avs though. They're playing well.

Backes is on waivers :(
Hope Petro takes note of that. Cautionary tale of what happens when you leave place where you have it good to chase $ and years. We dodged a bullet when he left, as even the contract we offered Backes (1 less year than Boston) would have still been terrible for us.

Man, really hate to see Backes on waivers. I totally understand it from a Bruins perspective but I hate to see it.

Backes was a popular player here, and a good citizen.

But it's no surprise that he couldn't live up to his contract in Boston. It was for too much term, too much money, too high of expectations by everyone concerned.

Why did you do it, David? You could have finished your career here, made good money, retired with dignity intact. But, as Billy Joel lamented, you had to be a big shot, didn't you?

Cautionary tale? If Backes stayed here, he still would have fallen off the cliff. He still would be sent down as we are just as deep if not deeper than Boston. Leaving here is not the reason his game fell off of a cliff. He just is not the player he was anymore. That has nothing to do with him chasing the money and term.

The only difference between signing here vs there, is now he has the extra money he definitely wouldn't have been able to secure on a subsequent contract. The only lesson from this cautionary tale is to make sure you get as much as you can while you can because who knows how long it will last. That is not a lesson we as Blues fans should want Petro to learn.

Think his point was that if he stayed here, he would currently be in the last year of his contract. And there’s no way the Blues would waive their captain and send him to the minors in his last year. Since Boston still has him for 1 more season after this one, and since they don’t have any sentimental value with him like we would have, this is now what it has come to.
