On this day (Dec 19th) 2015, Thunder Bay's Matt Murray played his 1st NHL game, stopping 24 of 26 shots in a 2-1 loss to Carolina. The 21 year-old was called up from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to back-up Jeff Zatkoff when Fleury suffered a concussion. He went 9-2-1 and then led the Penguins to the Stanley Cup the next spring.

Crazy to think three different goalies (Murray, Fleury, Zatkoff) started during that Cup run. Jarry was on the bench for one of those games too.

Zatkoff started the first game of the 2016 playoffs for us and he looked shaky throughout the game but got the job done with a big fat W. Jarry might have been on the bench for that one.

In 2017 Murray was the starter that ended up winning us the ECF and the Cup but Fleury playing out of his mind and well beyond anyone's expectations was probably the biggest shocker of the entire run. I will admit that I was solidly hating on MAF before the Caps series and thought we were doomed when Murray went down and Fleury became the starter. Tastiest crow I've ever eaten.

The world would have been a much simpler and better place if Matt Murray could stay healthy/adjust his game a little bit. Goaltending looked locked down for a decade and it wasn’t even locked down for 3 years.

Yes but how many players in any sport will ever be able to say that they won two championships before their rookie campaign ended?

If he had put on 20-30lbs like normal people do in their 20s he likely would have remained in the league the entire time. A lot of goals in the upper part of the net wouldn’t have gone in if he was heavier.

* Not even heavier..just a normal weight for his height. Dude is still a beanpole.

He's listed at 220 lbs now.

He’s 30 now and I hope he does well. I was referring to when he was a bit younger. He really was a scrawny guy. Him and Vasi were fairly similar at the same age but Matty wouldn’t gain any weight as he got older. At the end of the day, I think that really hurt him. Maybe just as much as the issues with losing his father.

*Just to add..10 extra lbs on the upper body as a goaltender in the NHL is huge. An extra centimeter here or there on either side of the shoulder can save 10-20 goals over a season. The margins are that tight now.
