Around the NHL 2025 playoff edition

I don’t see how it’s striking out

Sullivan was still under contract and the penguins never granted permission to speak with him.

Either way Mike Sullivan is pretty over rated. Won two cups with a prime Crosby,Malkin etc

Missed playoffs the last three years with one of the years being they only had to beat the bottom feeding hawks to get in. Before that 4 straight first round exits.

Not to mention the 4 nations debacle
My point isn’t as much about Mike Sullivan specifically, but about how the team does business and leaks things.

Whether it be free agents, trades or hiring a it also seems like the teams wants it to be known they are in on things. However most of the time they can’t seal the deal. It’s the Pierre Dorian era Senators syndrome of they want to be seen as trying, but really show that they can’t do the job. It isn’t a good look. Honestly, I rather have the Lou cone of silence.

I think you could probably directly point that to Marty being buddy buddy with weeekes as well

There is more than one culprit. Although I will point out in this instance that Lebrun is a go to guy for Fitz to get news out (although this tweet is probably more in info Fitz leaked last year).

I mean, hell, Kopitar defied age again this year. Take away Reinhart and Cirelli for Nico and Anze imo.
Im very pro Jarvis and pro Protas person. Nico had a good year, played huge role. But we just cant close our eyes on other players and their game.

Cirelli is second best in HDCA after Reinhart with 1000+ min 5 on 5. So thats the metric they used. Barkov has less minutes but he is good in this aspect too. But Barkov and Reinhardt and other player are good consistently in different aspects, Cirelli - not as well.

Do we have examples?

Guys like Hamilton and Meier are 2 big names that the Devils did land, as example. Pesce was a bigger free agent as well.

Markstrom, the Devils held out on and then got him for less than the rumored original ask.

Keefe was a top coach who was thought to possibly want to take time off after being fired and the Devils got him.

The Devils trying to get guys and then not paying more than they want, to me, is not the Devils losing out on deals, it’s them not obsessing over optics and holding to what they believe fair value is.

Saad in 2021
Gaudreau
The Matt Tkachuk flirtation
Marchessault and Stamkos (to a lesser extent).
The Sullivan stuff last year
Allowing the team to be used for JT Miller stuff this year.

Yes, sure in retrospect most of them are good misses. But that is besides the point. Letting everyone know you’re the bridesmaid isn’t a good look for the organization and doesn’t instill confidence in the front office as a fan.

Now in fairness this culture predates Fitz. Since Blitzer/Harris came in and Lou left there has been a culture of talking a big game and failing to deliver. That isn’t a good way to run a franchise.

There are no team that got everything they wanred. Especially with no benefit on taxes side. Devils did well with a lot of players.

You aren’t getting my point. It isn’t about what moves are actually made and aren’t made. It is about the front office making sure the team is out there in rumors and then running to certain insiders afterward to say “we tried.” It ultimately creates a loser perception of the team. The organization would be well served to button things up.

I dont actually think so. From players and management side. May be fans can do think this way. But it always look different from perspective of people who are in the business, who are in the industria. People are working together, are trying to make money together. May be there are some beef between teams like Devils and Rangers, but most likely - its just a battle picture for guys like me and especially you who can visit their games. Oh, Devils lost here and there look at them, oh, Rangers made those stupid moves or god damn why the hell they won their lottery, Lafrenier is better, no, its Jack Hughes who is better. In their hearts all of them dont give a f. They love this narratives because the more angry you are, the more noise you are making, the more tickets and jersies you will buy. Devils and Rangers are not making trades but Devils and Islanders are making trades like thats their back yard for stuff. If some team is talking wide open about offering some player - this player should say BIG THANK YOU VERY MUCH because Devils made a huge favor for them to have an opportunity to say "Devils are really interesting in me, you know, I heard that Jacky boy really need in goal scorer like me, but I would agree to sign your country songs for 8 mil per year". I think there are no NHL player who would think about the Devils as about a team that only tried.

The Sullivan stuff is basically completely made up since they never even talked to each other.

The Devils have won the brides, and arguably the biggest brides, more often than not if you compare our quick lists so nothing seems unreasonable to me.

If you don’t have confidence because the front office only makes the some of the biggest deals of the trade deadline or free agency every 2 years or so, then nobody can have confidence in their front office.

Gaudreau decided he rather be in a down market until the Flyers got their shit fixed and then get traded from CBJ to Philly, Palat as the 2nd option was a bigger issue.

Matt Tkachuk was never coming here, having to pay him 11-12M just to get close to Florida's AAV offer

This was a good miss like you said

Only job he was leaving for was the Rangers and that's clearly evident now

JT Miller leverage was fine because the Rangers paid more just like they made us do with Timo

I shit on Fitz but most of these aren't even that bad

In that same time span, the Devils signed Hamilton, Palat (granted bad contract), and traded for Meier.

Marchessault and Gaudreau spurned the Devils at the very end, nothing you can do. Fitz wouldn’t be doing his job if he didn’t try and woo Tkachuk, but he had no interest in NJ.

Sullivan was also him doing his due diligence asking Pittsburgh, but nothing he can do. Was a year too early unfortunately.

Feels like the JT Miller thing was to both drive up the price to a rival or to see if there was a possibility the Rangers price was so low the Devils could beat it. Either way, it’s not something I’d harp on Fitz for.

The other side of this is that when you have total silence, you look like you don't know what's wrong with the team or that there might be ways to improve. The Devils tried to get Marchessault, failed, and haven't added a winger of that caliber since - does that suggest to me that the Devils think they need another scorer? Yes, absolutely.

The Islanders would look like a do-nothing organization regardless of how they were ran in a public-facing way, because they were.

With Howard likely not signing with the Lightning, I would love to see Fitzgerald trade a 2nd + for his rights if he would sign here.

Just finished his junior season. Could go UFA next off-season which would mean Lightning would get a 2027 2nd as compensation. I’d give up a 2025 or 2026 2nd for him easily.
I believe some will trade late first because he is more nhl ready. If the price is a couple of late seconds, Fitz should do it in a heart bit.

Howard grew up in a Wisconsin town (Hudson) that’s less than 30 minutes from the Wild’s arena.
