Around the NHL 2024 25

Holy crap didn't know this, that's brutal. Leafs fan colleague is distraught and says he's finally jumping ship. Told me before the game too.

Honestly none of this franchise building is easy. They Draft Nylander (2014), Marner (2015), then win the lottery and draft Matthews (2016). For the life of me I don’t know how they drafted Liljegren over Robert Thomas in 2017 with Mark Hunter in the Leafs Organization still. Then in the Summer of 2018 they win the John Tavares sweepstakes and the Leafs look like they have their core in place. That was a pretty short but impactful rebuild.

In April of 2014 “Shanascam” was hired to build the leafs back…….Fast forward 11 years from that point and the Nylander draft that kick started this and it just hasn’t panned out. This core is lacking something that shows up in the playoffs every post season.

It will be interesting to see what happens this off season.

They drafted Lilly over Robert Thomas because of team needs at the time. That's why you never draft for team need. You take the better player, always.

Hunter was still around too and of course would know Thomas so well based on him playing for London. I agree team needs is a really bad idea to drive drafting. If you have a couple of players on the same tier I think its ok to consider need but you can’t take an inferior asset. That being said I have no idea how Toronto saw it back then.

Who cares... :D
On the one hand it's funny watching Leafs fans lose it every year. On the other hand, literally any of the final 8 teams could have won the cup and I wouldn't have been surprised. In the words of great philosopher Taylor Swift - "Leafs fans, you need to calm down, you're being too loud".

The PWHL can afford to experiment a bit. The NHL is run by old heads who fear change. Bettman and company refuse to tinker with the playoffs as is because it keeps fans engaged in the early rounds with big matchups out of the gate. People have wanted to go the conference 1v8 for a long time now but they won't because fans are a lot less engaged in the early rounds. This year it would have still made for good hockey but there are some years where top team vs wc is such a mismatch that no one watches.

Yeah I mean, they definitely can afford to experiment for that reason. It's definitely to their credit that they did. I'm glad they also moved on (for the most part) from their original foray into the inevitable women's sports conceit of refusing to name your teams after the plural of a countable noun. The original team names they trademarked looked more like old-timey newspapers than sports teams.

Dallas Stars owner Tom Gaglardi flew Mark Scheifele to Kitchener on his private jet after Game 6 to be with family following his father’s passing.
I'm loving all the love, support and respect for the Jets and Scheifele from the hockey world, in comparison to all of the vitriol and disdain towards the Leafs.

Edit: I've been corrected by my wife (like usual) that he was offered the private jet to fly to Kitchener but opted to fly home with the team. My statement still stands, though.

I know the Leafs got as far as us but how they played in game 5 and 7 would really bother me as a fan.

Know what you didn't see in our last game? One of our players screaming to the others to "wake TF up". Even when players needed to produce more (and still need to produce more for the role they've been given), you never saw that implosion. And that's probably why we were able to do what we did this year.

I think the intense scrutiny just puts additional pressure on the team. It's orders of magnitude more than other markets. 24/7 pro-Leafs coverage on the national networks turns to grief and rancor and all the players and management are getting crucified now.

Maybe Toronto just attracts the wrong type of player - the flipside of the "players who don't want to play in Winnipeg have a character flaw" coin is "players who want to play in Toronto have a character flaw".

Plus your captain is calling out players is not going to win over too many teammates.

Toronto also is eager to overpay as well.
Dubas was naively handing out short term high end contracts.
Zero to show for it.
At least he’s Pittsburghs problem now.

Sign Marner and hope he follows Datsyuk's playoff progression.

Agreed... maybe this is the "I can fix him" syndrome but if Marner is willing to consider signing with the Jets (which I doubt) then you offer him what it takes to sign and hope for the best later.

Yea I know our fan base complain that The Leafs get all the national media attention but it’s time to realize that it is probably a good thing it’s not happening to the Jets. What is the upside? It just puts this huge spot light and huge pressure on the Leafs players.

Agreed, the worst part of the Dubas era were the brutal contracts. It was the reverse of the home town discount.

Someone is going to offer Marner 12+. Jets won't even bother kicking the tires, even Tavares who had a very good season will cash in, again the Jets are not in the picture. Maybe teams will blow their wad early in free agency leaving the Jets with some really good options on the second tier free agent market.
