Around the NHL 2024 25

At this point he's just a one trick pony PP specialist. He's just too much of a defensive liability turnover machine 5 on 5.
PP is all he has left. And even then,,, he's basically told the whole league exactly where he will be on the PP and is just asking people to try and stop him.

PP Goal % vs Total Goals (regular season)

2016-17 : 25%
2017-18 : 45%
2018-19 : 50%
2019-20 : 29%
2020-21 : 33%
2021-22 : 33%
2022-23 : 36%
2023-24 : 17%
2024-25 : 75%

Winnipeg : 306GP - even 0
Columbus : 174GP - minus 58
Montreal : 52GP - minus 14

The Oilers defense and goaltending are crap, but the KINGS absolutely TERIRIFY me! That’s a team that capitalizes on their scoring chances.

I think they’re going to the Western Conference Final and maybe further.

They dressed 11 forwards and one of them is Jeff Malott, who never had a chance here. If the Kings had two injuries up front they'd be hurting.

Oilers defense can't hit though, maybe Nurse. Golden Knights or Wild will play them rough if they go through.

The difference in the Leafs being up 2-0 instead of down 0-2 is their special teams 4/7 PP ... last year the Leafs only scored one PPG.
The difference in the Oilers being down 0-2 is the same reason special teams 0/5 on the PP and Kings are 5/10 on the PP ... they both have the same number of goals on 5v5.
The Blues only have 1 even strength goal in the series.
Special teams is important in the playoffs it changes the game very quicker if you can or cannot score on the PP. Another example the Avs yesterday they score on the 4 min PP to start OT they are up.
Jets need to get their PP going and improve their PK if they want to go on a run.

You remember everyone absolutely shitting on Wheeler and Scheifele for running him out of town? Maybe they had a point about him not giving enough shits.
Laine was always a strange duck. I don't think he fit in - definitely not with Wheeler (who's admitted he wasn't great when things were going poorly). I don't know if there's anything anyone could've done to get him on the right track back then. He certainly had obvious potential to be a real star...

Anybody here truly surprised at how the Oilers are doing?

To me, it looks like they've reverted back to their norm. Last year was the outlier for them, in my opinion; a not-very-good team that got hot at just the right time. What we're seeing now is the Oilers they way they're mbuilt to be - two superstars surrounded by a mostly adequate-to-mediocre team

I've been saying this for several years. Hockey is a team sport first, and in the salary cap era, it's almost impossible for a team with superstars to win the Cup, because the superstars take up too much of the cap. Combine that with management that has been incompetent more often than not for the past couple of decades, and you've got the Oilers.

I've been laughing all year at the chuckleheads (and there are so, so many of them) that said the Oilers were the favourites to win it all this year, because look how close they came last year.

What they failed to understand is that it was last year's Oilers team that was the anomaly. They generally are a much worse team than what they showed last year. They just aren't built right, despite having arguably the two best players.
The problem in Edmonton is there is no margin for error when you are paying 2 guys 20+ mill a year.
Every mistake is magnified.
Sign a 4-5 D man to 9 mill a year?
Not match the offer sheets to Broberg and Holloway?
Rely on a subpar goalie?
Ekholm getting hurt puts a spotlight on how bad that D core is now.

If the Jets hadn't won 2nd prize in the lottery would have been looking at Matthew Tkachuk or Clayton Keller in their draft spot.

Jeez I forgot how bad 2015-2016 was, not a single Canadian team in the playoffs.

You remember when people wanted us to get Armia back?
I did. Good PKer. Jets PK hasn't been good. But Tanev is probably the better guy to have out of the two. All around.

Funny I feel asleep for the 3rd period, so I missed it, but the 2nd period, other than Laine's backchecking, I thought Armia was ok. He put a puck on Newhook's stick that should have found the back of the net.

Marty St. Louis is looking for answers. Demidov was pretty bad through 2 periods, some careless turnovers, and got promoted.

I think this series could be a sweep. Even though Logan Thompson looks beatable with the rebounds he gives up.

Seems Avs fans aren't too thrilled about the Nelson trade at this point.
Here are some posts from their board ….

“The Brock Nelson trade will go down as a total and complete bust. Such a low energy guy, plays slow, takes forever to make a play or take a shot. Not giving up the team’s best forward prospect for that.”

“ It’s painfully clear that Nelson doesn’t want to be in Colorado. He gives next to no effort. Completely wasted trade.”

“Pathetic f***in effort, and inability to show up by Nelson”.

“Second line looked good and not because of Nelson”.

“And the Isles fans saying Nelson is a playoffs beast were wrong”.

“CMac in his office watching Brock Nelson highlights right now thinking I swear to god he was faster in New York”.

Funny how Matthews is the only Top 10 pick that year who's still with the team that drafted him (Keller's technically with a new team in Utah, according to the NHL at least).

#2 Laine's on his 3rd team. PLD and Puljujarvi are on their 4th. Nylander's on his 5th. Jost is on his 4th. You have to go to McAvoy at 14 before you find another guy with the team that drafted him. Seems a bit unusual, but I guess 2016 was quite a while ago.

In all, Stanley Cup Playoffs viewership across ESPN, ESPN2, and TBS is averaging 842,000 viewers, down 18% versus this point last season. Unfortunately, from a ratings perspective, the NHL was dealt a bad hand. Five Canadian teams made the Stanley Cup Playoffs, a factor that can depress audiences stateside. And when it comes to the American teams that did make the playoffs, most are not the “glamor” teams that many think about when they watch the NHL. None of the four American “Original Six” teams made the postseason, completely eliminating the New York, Chicago, Boston, and Detroit markets. Without these marquee teams, the NHL will struggle to match last season’s viewership. And depending on which teams make deep runs (read: Winnipeg, Ottawa, etc.), things could get real ugly.

Hate to say it, but my dream final would be Winnipeg VS Toronto. ( * with Jets winning of course )

- Would cause Bettman to lose sleep
- People south of the border might actually learn how to spell Winnipeg.
- People might actually realize we don't get snow here 12 months of the year

- But most importantly, the amount of money I will be able to sell tickets to games I might have to miss, to sell these to displaced Leafs fans, will be insane.

Laine played his best NHL hockey in Winnipeg. He was getting bad advice, not sure from who, that he was being underutilized and his future was limited with the Jets. His career has been downhill since he left for Columbus. Somehow, he peaked after 2 or 3 years in the league and has been de-developing every since. Whoever was whispering in his ear during his last year as a Jet really did a disservice to him.

Seeing Winnipeg Leafs fans in the White-out wearing blue would make me throw up.

After watching Nelson last night the Jets definitely dodged a bullet, same goes for Laughton. What Chevy got for PLD via Laine will go into the NHL trade history book as one of the most one sided trades especially if Salo hits.
