I just don't see how that model works.

By the time you're competing your first batch of good players are approaching ufa and are really expensive, and if you make a couple of drafting mistakes you're no better than you would have been had you just tried to keep reloading.

Then you have a bunch of fan attrition and no real success.

How many times does the full rebuild work vs. fail?
I think you need 2 conditions for a successful rebuild unless you draft a couple superstars in quick succession. You need some young depth already in place that you hold onto that can help bring along the kids and still be good players throughout the rebuild. Then you need to be a destination market that attracts UFAs to jump start things once the kids have developed for a few years.

Everyone underestimates the need for a top goalie... san jose tanked because injuries and jones collapse - then they panicked - they need askarov to seize his moment next year or its a never ending rebuild

Great goaltending is a huge equalizer. It can compensate for shortcomings elsewhere in a line up (like having a top line that doesn't dominate their matchups)

How many times does any building strategy work vs fail?

What constitutes success? Just making the PO and hope? Cup or bust? How about making the final 4? I think success is relative to expectations. Once you bottom out, improving year over year is a level of success. Your fans are probably happy, to a point. Maybe happy fans filling the seats is the best criteria for success.

In the past 10 seasons 2 teams have won the Cup without at least 1 first overall pick. One of those 2 had a 2nd, a 4th and a 5th OA. The other had a 3rd, a 4th and a 5th OA. None had fewer than 2 top 5 picks.

Jets currently have 1 top 5 pick, Niederreiter, who was taken 5th OA in 2010. We have no top 4 picks.

So high picks don't guarantee a Cup. But lack of them pretty much eliminates the possibility.

If you want to win a Cup, you have to drop down for at least a couple of years. You need to time that for years that have strong draft classes. At least strong at the top. Then you need to draft well. Then you need to stay the course.

The alternative is to stay in that mushy middle, making the PO more often than not and hoping to win a series or two.

So if you are not a destination market you don't have a chance?
I really don't think those UFAs are a required part of it.

I think you need some solid veteran players to help bring the kids along. They need to still be fairly young when you start out if they are still going to be good enough when your young draftees begin to arrive. I think you can supplement those players with UFAs. Just not the big name guys who choose their destinations.

Sharks literally had no other choice than full rebuild. Bad, bloated contracts given to declining and underperforming vets + zero prospect pipeline = full rebuild.

Pretty hard to reload when you’re not going to get good market value on what few assets you have. Look at what E. Karlsson fetched coming off a 100 point season.

To me, the whole reload/rebuild thing is a bit of a fan construct. Most organizations - possibly excluding the real poverty ones like Coyotes or Melnyk-owned Sens - would love to stay in a perpetually competitive state and invest the money to do so.

I think what we term “rebuild/reloads” are decisions that come about pretty organically once the brass realizes there’s little to no hope of competing for a playoff spot with the roster they have.

KK starting for Avs tonight

Will be interesting to see what happens
the Avs are decimated w/ injuries right now. i believe 6 top-9ers are out, excluding Landeskog, & they have Kylington at Fwd
