While I'm happy to see the back of Rantanen from the Central Division, I fear what the bigger implications of this trade might be. A lot of chatter, be it unsubstantiated, about room being made for a man who wears number 87. If so, I'll be sick to my stomach.
I would dead on the floor shocked if Crosby left Pittsburgh, then again another crack at the cup before he bows out with Nate Mac might be tempting.

And that’s the rub, MacK and Sid would be a terrifying.

From what I've read this evening on the Av's board, that's a huge part of it.
Didn’t think of it that way. I thought it was Rantenan for Crosby.

Does seem like the Avs aren’t done tinkering with their lineup before playoffs.

Hall might reduce Rantanen’s value to that of Necas. Not sure the Canes are collectively that much better. If they resign Rantanen and move on from Hall, and find solid goaltending, that could be a big win for Carolina.

I think for the Avs they didn't have the draft and prospect pool to significantly improve, so they used their most valuable asset, who likely wasn't coming back, to hold water, improve depth. I think Necas acquisition might spell the end of Nichushkin in Colorado.

Canes looking to have the best top line in hockey, if they load em up.

I haven’t done the math in the trade to see what they can now afford at the deadline but this might be as simple as it looks. There was no deal to be had for Rantanen going forward and they were not prepared to use him as an own rental and this was the best deal they could get. I will hold off final judgment to see what other moves they make by the TD.

On the surface I would prefer to play the Avs without Rantanen but just as important we need Val to go away since he killed us last year.

I like this trade for us, but wouldn't if I'm the Avs. They lost a major piece and part of their identity. Rantanen brings high end skill and power to the table. Necas while also big doesn't use his size nearly as much. I guess they are doubling down on finesse.

To me they just became a much easier team to defend.

To be frank I'd rather face a nearly 38 year old Crosby than a playoff warrior in his prime Rantanen in the playoffs.

Yup. Sid is still great but he's not as good as he once was.

I guess Chicago really wanted to get rid of Hall who at this point in his career is collecting jerseys, this is his 7th and next year will probably be his 8th

He's still a useful middle 6 player. They likely could have gotten more at the deadline for him.
