Fascinating.I believe it was part of the agreement when Smith bought the team that they get to treat it as a new franchise.

Canadien fans should be deported back to their board. They regularly derail threads on other boards over some ego trip they haveOn another note, IDK if I can stand another 30 threads on the main board about Demidov after going through it with Hutson this season...
I wanted Demidov so bad at the draft and now all I want is for him to bust just because I don't want to hear Canadien fans.
I love Leo and prefer him, but it's plays like this that really shock me that Verbeek took him over Fantilli. Just seems like the definition of a Verbeek guy.
I remember reading something where Verbeek said " was Leo my choice initially? No, I wouldn't say that. That was a really impressive sequence for Fantilli.
While I guess I’m not terribly surprised we picked Leo (and I think they made the right choice actually) what kind of surprised me is how Verbeek pretty much knew who he wanted very early on. I think Alexis or somebody asked him right after the Lotto if he knew who he wanted and he responded affirmatively.” It didn’t sound like it was really up for debate; at least not intensely.

That's the same article I read. In the athletic the Day after Leo got drafted. My recollection is that Verbeek stated he had two players he was considering. He was initially leaning towards one player, Fantilli, but the scouts pushed him towards Carlsson. By mid-point of the season, his mind was made up. It was Carlsson, and he didn't look back.
