Around the NHL - (2024-25)

The reason why is probably a reason that is not allowed to be discussed on these boards.

Congrats to Ovi.

NHL.com says Utah scored a "franchise record" 7 goals. But I'm sure the Yotes or Jets have scored 7 goals or more. I mean those Jets had Selanne/Housley/Tkachuk/Zhamnov, or Hawerchuck/MacLean/Carlyle/Steen etc. I guess we're just pretending Utah is an expansion team?

I believe it was part of the agreement when Smith bought the team that they get to treat it as a new franchise.

Yeah, this is the deal. The Coyotes franchise stayed in Arizona and can be re-started by another owner since Meruelo slunk away with his billion dollars. The Utah franchise is considered a brand new organization that bought all the players and personnel from Arizona.

It isn't even a technicality. They are literally a new franchise the same way Vegas and Seattle were.

1. Coyotes franchise sold to the NHL, but part of the deal is the owners retain all IP for 5 years.
2. NHL now owns all assets outside of the IP, such as employees, hardware, etc.
3. NHL does an expansion deal with Utah, but part of the deal included all the non-IP assets of the Coyotes.

On another note, IDK if I can stand another 30 threads on the main board about Demidov after going through it with Hutson this season...

I wanted Demidov so bad at the draft and now all I want is for him to bust just because I don't want to hear Canadien fans.

Just a note on your points 1 and 2 (and please correct me if I misunderstood this since it was rather complicated): I believe that Meruelo relinquished the IP back to the league when he failed to get that land deal done. So I don't think the Coyotes' former ownership group has any rights to a future Arizona team any longer. The NHL can award an Arizona franchise to the highest bidder.

Correct, although I dont know if he actually relinquished it back. I know he has stopped perusing it, but I'm not sure why he would relinquish it back for free. I think you are correct though, because Arizona is being talked about for the next expansion which can only happen if the NHL has the IP again.

If I remember correctly, Meruelo's retention of the IP was contingent upon his group securing certain land to be used for development of an arena. When that whole thing fell through and Bettman sent him a strongly worded email, Meruelo gave up his guaranteed rights to a future franchise, took the billion dollars he got for selling the franchise to Ryan Smith, and went to bilk some other poor suckers.

I think I heard this as well on 32 thoughts, but not for sure
