Around the NHL 2024-25 regular season Part II

Fayne having the puck bounce on him with an open net on a 2-on-1 late in a tied game 1, and Kovy hitting the crossbar in overtime in game 2... that was it. Those two moments decided the series for LA. Those two go in, and we win. Still a great player, despite the contract nonsense and then the cut and run.

totally agree even with a split going to LA i think the devils could've gut out a win. the kings were never tested early in any series that post season a split would've done some damage i think

that seems pretty late in the year for them to be the first. would've figured someone would be out already go figure.

Last year Chicago was first out on March 10 followed by San Jose (March 12) and Anaheim (March 18). That's the other problem with the Gold Plan, it maybe makes more sense in the NBA where points for OT/SO losses aren't a thiing.

personally i think the lotto system is fine teams that miss should still have a shot at it. one thing that should be fixed is that the order for playoff teams should lock once the playoffs start. its stupid if a team wins the cup as the 16th making the playoffs on the last day they then end up picking last in the draft?

We were probably one of the reasons it got changed. When we won in 1995, the draft slots were locked in and then Petr Sykora fell into our laps at #18.

I suppose it's punishment that teams are fine with it means they got 3-4 rounds of home playoff game revenue. Maybe more of an argument to be had that the Conference Finalists shouldn't get moved.

Before they slotted the four Conference finalists into the final four spots, Anaheim had Ryan Getzlaf fall to them in 2003. Anaheim then kinda got screwed in 2010. They had Philly's 1st rounder as part of the Chris Pronger trade and that was the year the Flyers/Rangers had the loser goes home season finale. Then Philly went on a run and Anaheim saw that pick go from #10 to #15 to #29. But the back half of that first rounder was checkered to say the least and that tends to happen in most years.

LA's been pretty much the only Cinderella to win the Cup since the rule change in 2007 and their pick went from #17 to #30. I don't think many tears were shed about that drop. St. Louis went from #20 to #31 in 2019.

If Rempe made that hit they would give him a medal and a certificate of achievement for making a clean hit and being an example of how the game should be played.

Actually I think that after his last long suspension, Rempe's hits are presumed to be violations and he would suffer from the opposite bias.

And really where's the penalty here? He hits him squarely from the front, it's not a charge as he's not taking multiple strides to line him up, the hit is to the chest and he leads with the shoulders with his arms down . . . I totally agree there's something broken with the refs and unfortunately what I don't understand is how this survived review in Toronto.

There is very, very real (to the point of being admitted) bias among refs in this league. I mean, the thing that happened with Keefe and the ref who were involved in a court case on opposite sides is nuts considering he was allowed to ref a game Keefe was coaching in.

Agreed. The league has been officiating him very tight. As they should IMO. Rangers didn’t have to play such a reckless player so they have to face the consequences of any ticky tacky calls.

This league is a joke with what's called and what isn't. That's a major and game? Please.
It looks like Biuchnevich is looking down at the puck just prior to the hit. I don't think McCarron was aiming for the head but their relative heights led to that. It would help if the league would really standardize and be clear about these big hits.

Some rumblings that the decentralized draft could be a one off. Cam Robinson had a separate interview where he mentioned some GMs were pitching a normal draft in Montreal either every year or every other year.

Main problem (to me) remains the timing. ABC/ESPN/TNT won't want the NHL to go against the NBA, so the SCF is getting pushed to late June. Last year going to Game 7 was worst case scenario. Game 7 was the Monday of draft week. Draft was June 28-29 and then free agency was July 1. Some east coast staffs opted to stay a few extra days in Vegas to prep for free agency.

Don't know if the NHL/NHLPA would consider pushing free agency back a week or two to open up some breathing room.

The penalty he took last night is a perfect example. I've seen a lot worse elbows not called, but his reputation likely resulted in the call last night, which ultimately led to a PPG and wound up being the game winner. But hey, he gives Rags fans a boner every time he farts, so that's good, right?

They will never do either of these ideas but I say all the games should be at unique outdoor venues with minimal fans or not. Like Lake Tahoe or the other idea they do vs like ahl all stars or junior all stars. Nothing will top the 4 nation passion but I think vs a different league would help

I do think that's a good idea. Find some place up north and do a game Mystery Alaska style. I think Golf is incredibly boring, but admit visually its really nice on TV. Add some nice visuals with the game - i think a lot of people would be into that.

I think the 4 nations... it was great hockey. However I think we did catch a little bit of lightning in the bottle this year because of politics. You and I know that the hockey was great... but I'm not positive we'll get as many casual viewers in the future.

Time to update my anti-Gold Plan text file.

Every year on the main boards, somebody suggests the Gold Plan as a solution for tanking but they don't really do a deep dive. Essentially the Gold Plan would assign draft spots based on the number of points accrued after a team was eliminated from playoff contention. On the surface, it seems like a decent idea, except it ends up being random since there aren't that many games left.

Last year's order if determined by the Gold Plan:

1. Chicago (actual #2)
2. Arizona (#6)
3. Anaheim (#3)
4. Calgary (#9)
5. Columbus (#4)
6. San Jose (#1)
7. Ottawa (#7)
8. Seattle (#8)
9. Montreal (#5)
10. Buffalo (#11)
11. Minnesota (#13)
12. St. Louis (#16)
13. New Jersey (#10)
14. Philadelphia (#12)
15. Pittsburgh (#14)
16. Detroit (#15)

Some inherent problems: Teams in different conferences could be eliminated on the same day late in the season but have a differing number of games remaining. Minnesota and New Jersey were both eliminated April 10th last season, but the Wild had four games remaining and we only had three. So we'd drop three spots due to the randomness of 3-4 games.

If you're a selling team, do you hang onto a veteran if he doesn't command a premium return at the trade deadline? Like if you were Ottawa, do you trade Vladimir Tarasenko for a couple 3rd round picks or keep him to try to improve your draft slot? Obviously Tarasenko would prefer a chance at a Cup versus helping Ottawa get a prospect that he'd never play with.

If I'm counting on my fingers correctly, only 9 of the 20 guys the Blackhawks used in last year's season finale are still with the team. A higher draft pick isn't exactly a huge incentive for guys like Seth Jones or Taylor Hall. [/rant]

My hero, I actively loath the Gold Plan.

Improving your draft position isn’t something that will (or should) motivate NHL players.

Management of non-playoff teams should focus on the future and bottom feeders need the highest picks.

A large swath of fans wouldn’t know about it or understand it even if they did.

It gives me a headache just imagining announcers discussing it.

Hate everything about, kill the Gold Plan with fire.

I think they should all partake in a giant celebrity poker game.

Not NHL news, but I guess I have less of an excuse to visit my friends in Portland and Seattle now that I can watch WHL. Had to download the Victory app to watch Ducks/Devils this year, not my favorite service but at least it's free.

Unique outdoor game would be fantastic. One of the big ODR Instagram lakes in Canada, Tahoe, Placid.
