They are only four points out of 2WC, the bottom of the East is a pile of mediocrity. We should have been in trouble long before now vis a vis making the playoffs but the East has kept us at arms length till now.
The sad thing was that on New Year's Day, and I think even into the first week or two of January (I kept posting about it daily at the time) every team in the East that was above NHL 500 was in a playoff spot. And every team that was NHL.500 or below it were not.

That was literally the line for being in the playoffs in the East at one point.

Then several teams got on a (humpty) heater and here we are, only the absolute dreg of the East are below NHL 500 right now.

The Islanders had a 7 game winning streak at one point, the Red Wings had a really strong heater after making the coaching change to McLellan (LOL), the Habs at one point had the best record in the league for a 2 month stretch, despite being like 8 or 10 games under NHL.500 at the time that started. The Rangers have had gotten enough points to bring them back to life in that time. Columbus got on a tear.

I think only Pittsburgh, Philly and Buffalo have been dead the last two months.
