Around the NHL 2024-25 regular season Part II

Honestly I think you guys are underselling how shitty this deal was for Vancouver and I didn’t even want him…but literally the only arguments you could make for it being a bad deal are if you think he’s a cancer (maybe he is, but the Rangers have had him before and still wanted him back) or if you think they somehow miss the playoffs both this year and next year and fork over a lottery pick.

Vancouver didn't take back significant bad money (Chytil expires in 2027) and they got a 1st round pick back for a player who has been effectively out of town for 3 months. Is it good, no, is it about the best they could hope for, absolutely.

It’s probably the best they could have hoped for cause Miller was likely a **** who only would have waived for the Bluestains and maybe a handful of other teams if that, but still a shitty return.

playing at nearly a point per game this year, I wish our players were “effectively out of town” too.

Miller has 5 more years left, skipped a month of the season for ???, appears to be a locker room problem, and has definitely done some shit on the ice that is less than desirable. Where do you think all these teams are who want this guy?

I was referring to the fact that it was inevitable that he was moved, not that he had given up on the season. But there is that mystery month!

Did we ever hear anything about why he missed that month? Was he in player assistance? Or just a personal leave? I don’t remember hearing player assistance, but maybe I just forgot.

NYR committed to another guy who will be on the downswing for 5 more years, VAN inches closer to Quinn not resigning.

If you have any kind of medium term view, this is nothing but good for us.
Also sets a baseline price for 31 year olds (miller is about 4 months older than Hamilton) with expensive term and significant trade protections getting a 1st+ for all the people who want to move Hamilton.

Dougie Hamliton has never had things said about him like JT Miller, is a right shot dman in a league where it's overly valued at times and still can be effective as a PPQB1. They're not even close comparables. Like I said yesterday, a team like Dallas would be all over Hamliton in the summer

Can’t even make the bad contract argument the way you could have twelve hours ago.

I've been on record saying multiple times here and on the main board that Vancouver was never winning a trade with Miller. You trade Miller because you want to fix that locker room, hockey point of view they got tremendously worse today. But to act like NYR is somehow a world beater again with this dude is equally as laughable.

I'm on your side here.

I'm more so talking to/about those in here convinced Dougie is somehow a cap dump that we'll have to pay to move him because he's old and has 3 years left after this year, and has trade protections

And so, hopefully, Miller, who is older than dougie with 5 more years left after this year and a full NMC, getting a 1st+ should shut them up on that front a bit.

I too think Dallas or Florida are the spots.

This was based on his play this year, he's picked it up since to his credit which should help if the Devils move on from him. The better he plays, the less I want to do it but there's some push coming to shove with Dougie/right side of New Jersey's defensive core

Also of note, you could even potentially send Dougie to Van now with this cap they've opened up for the future. They certainly have a hole at RHD.

And, selling a C and repurposing those assets into a RHD is not something Van hasn't done before (Horvat Hronek)

Seeing that return for jt with the cap going up up up and knowing they are going to lose him for nothing. Make the Canucks an offer this summer get Quinn for cheap.

Seems like a desperate trade from the Rangers. A potential unprotected 1st round pick in 2026 from a team relying on a bunch of over 30 forwards in Panarin, Miller, Zibanejad, Trocheck and Kreider is a potential premium asset. Having that Shesterkin, Miller and Zibanejad contracts long term could really sink that team in the coming years.

Who cares if they "won" the trade? This is the Rangers doing what they always do...this doesn't make them threatening in the slightest.

It's ironic how Devils fans engage in the same type of hyping up of that team as the pundits, the only difference is the one comes from unearned superficial reverence and the other comes from misplaced inferiority complex.

Disagree there. Chytil + 1st round pick (potentially unprotected in 2026) is great value. I would have been hesitant to take on Miller's contract for free (5.5x$8M contract until he turns 37), getting a 1st + Good young center on reasonable contract (health issues aside) and taking on no bad money is great work by Vancouver.

Probably unfair to speculate but I’m not sure it’s unrelated based on what the media seems to say

And the Rangers hype cycle continues. They love bringing in the big name today, but in two years they’ll be trying to dump Miller on Utah, so that they have the cap space to go after the next big name.

They never learn, and I hope they never do.

Oh No

Had to post it. I've been watching their specials again lately. They're one of my comfort shows in stressful times.

I think its a short-term good deal for the Rangers. Maybe he shakes up the locker room. He's a good player - we can't deny that. I think this trade makes sense for them and their window. And with a rising cap - they can likely figure things out in the future (wonder if thats why the deal was done today).

Vancouver did OK - considering the situation they were in. The conditions on that first are interesting. Chytl - they're taking a shot on. I don't know about the other guy. Plus NYR takes on the full salary.

Would Miller make us better? Yes, of course. But by all accounts we have a good locker room - and a bigger window going forward. We've already got a core locked up. And if the speculation about Miller is true - would we be worried about messing with that?

Look around at the conference and assess the futures of most of those teams as reasonably as you can. We have a great opportunity here for a long long time. All we need to do is acquire the right depth forwards and probably find another goalie after Markstrom is done. If Fitz can do some of it at the draft over the next 4-5 years, we'll be in an incredible position.

I don't necessarily think we should go crazy on this season - the team has been strangely unconvincing most of the time - but Fitz should be going for it every year. If FLA and WAS are the best the conference has to offer, that's not saying much.

Them getting an unprotected 'lottery' pick in 2026 is even more unlikely than us forking over a two for Jake Allen. It's almost certainly at worst going to be a mid-round pick, whether it winds up being this year or next year. Chytil's an okay player but you guys are overrating him now that he's not a Ranger, his 'best' season wasn't even as good as Dawson Mercer two years ago.
