Around the NHL 2024-25 regular season Part II

I’m sure they’d find a way. I don’t think I’ll ever have cap concerns again when we’ve all seen how VGK and TAM manipulate it.
Those are one-off in a single season. I highly doubt the team can figure out a way to have all three brothers + Nico + Bratt + Timo under the cap for multiple years. Something would have to be sacrificed.

Eventually you'd have hoped Nemec would play his way into a big contract, I assume that's what would be sacrificed in the long run. I'll be that guy and say I'd rather not have them all together anyway, I feel like sometimes the two exacerbate each other's bad habits. Jack certainly hasn't been as dominant since his near Hart-worthy season.

Well yes of course, them figuring it out in includes making some sort of sacrifice.

I dont know about Quinn lmao.. but the cap going up over a fourth of what it is now in the next five years! From what ive read the profits are there for a significant increase over the entire next decade

It may be a serious chance to maintain a contender with higher end talent than the competition, if done right! Since were coming out of a rebuild it stands to reason that maybe we can be one of those teams that can capitalize

Depending on when a hypothetical trade for Quinn happens, maybe Dougie goes back the other way.

If it’s soon (which I don’t think it will be) maybe they take Dougie. If it’s later than soon then maybe they still take Dougie as it’s a defenseman they can use.

Nemec/Casey + Dougie + 1st + Timo + Haula
For
Quinn and the guy that he likes more out of Miller/Pettersson

The most likely thing is we wait out the Quinn contract and clear the decks to sign him as a free agent.

HOWEVER...I like my deal because it unloads Haula ;)

Arguing about cap stuff when the cap will be 100M+ in 2 years when Quinn and Nico are set to be UFA's, I love you crazy f***s lmao.

If Quinn is a Devil, he's either going to hold Vancouver hostage and tell them places he'd re-sign long term a la Calgary with Matt Tkachuk which would help us or just flat out walk in 2027. We're also in the opposite conference which Vancouver would prefer. The Devils would be set up in a situation to get him better than every team in the league tbh.

Dillon and Siegs will probably get tossed that offseason in cap dump style trades. Siegs will probably still be good to where a team with cap space will take him + Dillon is hot garbage now so that's probably going to be a cap dump. Their left side would be both Hughes brothers and probably someone like Silayev. They'll be fine cap wise for a Quinn add. Also why is Bratt listed there? He's making way less than he should be anyway. Palat/Hamliton are bigger cap issues for the roster they ice in 27-28.

I am definitely far less confident in the salary cap remaining at that level in 2 years. It might be 100M at that point, it might not, but it staying that high would surprise me; I would not keep projecting upward revenues for the NHL (or anything) farther out than that.

How would we afford all three brothers? Sounds like a pipe dream.

cap going up i'm sure they will take realistic contracts to all be on the same team during a cup contending window it really wouldn't be hard at all besides the point they would all be worth the contracts they sign anyway its not like one of them would be a bum on a big contract to just keep the others.

devils would be foolish to let the cap stand in the way of getting quinn

Was listening to the 32 Thoughts podcast and Friedman wondered when the last time two contenders made a significant midseason trade. I immediately thought of the COL/NJD trade of Rolston for Lemieux+ in November 1999.

Interesting deal to look back on. From a Colorado perspective it seemed more straightforward as Lemieux was an impending UFA who they didn't have the budget to sign. Colorado would be sold in April 2000 to an owner with deep pockets.

Devils had an overflow of LW/C types and needed a natural RW to balance out the lineup plus Pepe's grit which was missing. Elias/Morrison held out to start the season but signed around Halloween. Scott Gomez had unexpectedly made the roster in their absence but had earned his roster spot after a big opening month. Of secondary concern was the 2000 Expansion Draft and Lou knew we couldn't protect everybody. Lemieux being an impending UFA freed up a protection spot for somebody else.

Obviously neither Rolston/Lemieux were as good as Rantanen and then neither guy would be involved in the 2001 SCF.
thats a name i haven't thought of in a long time! i remember pre internet how much hype he had with devils fans oh man i could only imagine how much lou would've been bashed on here if hf was around when he got dealt.

Petr Sykora and Brendan Morrison were the first prospects I followed when my interest ramped up in the mid-90's. I always credit/blame having NHL '95 for PC and I could edit lines and add new players. I had a classmate who had moved from Michigan and he was talking up Morrison, so I watched Michigan's run in 1996. Pretty sure I saw the Mike Legg lacrosse goal live. Naturally with it being 1996, the easy comparison for Morrison for me was Paul Kariya who was tearing it up in Anaheim.

Fast forward to 2000 and I was actually bummed that we included Denis Pederson in the Mogilny deal. I was still a noob when it came to prospects, so I think I overvalued Pederson if only for being a former 1st rounder. Pederson was an alternate captain to start that season but he seemed at odds with Lou. Since he was one of the few RH forwards, Pederson got shifted to RW but he preferred playing center. Lou was juggling 15 NHL forwards so at some point Pederson stayed longer on IR despite being healthy because Lou had to make a corresponding roster to free up a roster spot. At the time I thought Pederson would have the career that John Madden ended up having.

My memory is foggy, but I seem to recall the HF 2000 reaction being positive for the Devils since getting Mogilny was a move to put us over the top. But to this day, a Morrison Michigan jersey is still on my wish list.
