They know who Necas is - a passenger, complementary kind of player. This breakout was nice but likely not the reality of who he is or will be, based on their past experience. More importantly, they have the cap room to give Rantanen something close to what he wants, plus they will be turning over a lot of the roster to ELCs into a rising cap. But say, Rantanen leaves - you got, by far, the best deadline acquisition for a team trying to win now in exchange for a guy who was likely leaving in a year anyway based on contentious negotiations.

I'd also put money on an aging Rantanen still being a better player than peak Necas.
Presumably he will be an expensive extension. That’s just not been the Carolina style but we will see.

We’ll see

I have some skepticism that this trade is going to work out for Carolina.

On paper they definitely got better players then what went out the door. But is the new roster mix going to work?

There center depth is really suspect and if they play Mikko at center, he is going to be a less effective player.

It certainly could work really well for them. Probably will work in the regular season, but I'm not totally sold they just bought themselves a cup or even a ticket to the finals

What a get for Carolina. They've been trying to bring in a top power forward for years and they've managed to get the best, if not one of the best in the game. Huge talent difference from what they gave up.

Will he stay there though? No chance Colorado trades him if they think he'd resign there. Does he just want to hit UFA for a big payday? Something Carolina can work with. Or does he has a specific team in mind that he wants to join?

Finishing has been their problem. They got two guys who know what to do with it when they have daylight.

I don't fear them and I think they're still in one step back for two steps forward mode. But they definitely got better and it will be a dogfight in the first round. Which is fine. Our group is not the '22 Avs or '10 Hawks. It's going to be grueling if we win it all.

I don’t think I would ever really call Hall a finisher, he was more of a volume creator when he was at his best.

He has a career average of 25 goals and shoots 10.2%. His shots per 60 are also trending downwards due to his age.

Hall is fine, I’m only being picky on thinking he’s a guy who is a better than normal finisher.

We don't know if the Canes are finished. Their weakness this year is their defense so they may still put in work to fix that.

I guess this does take them out of the JT Miller sweepstakes?

What sweepstakes? I still get the sense that Vancouver is trying to create a market where there isn't much of one.

The Rangers are bidding against themselves and Drury hasn't gotten desperate enough to pull the trigger yet.

5 years seems like it’s a bit long to commit to Kovacevic based solely on what he’s shown in just half a season here.

But if going extra years allows us to keep him for that AAV, I think we’d have to take that.

Agreed. Does this make them better? Absolutely. However, they’ve still lost Necas here. It’s not as if they gave up a top prospect and added Rantanen to what they already have.

If I’m Fitz, this should not affect what I do. There’s no reason for a knee jerk reaction and I know there won’t be one. He’s a calculated, measured, shrewd GM and he isn’t going to have his cage rattled by another team’s piece of business. I don’t think we make a blockbuster deal. I do see us adding a bottom 6 center and secondary scoring piece (Zucker? Palmieri?)

If they don’t extend Rantanen, this is an all-time historically awful trade imo. They’d have essentially given up Necas for nothing. I have to imagine they Carolina has strong reason to believe they will be able to ink Rantanen.
Necas was soured in the Canes already . Probably wasn’t going to resign after current contact was up so may as well upgrade him by getting Rant . Even if they can’t resign him , Necas was gone anyways after current deal , but he did have 2/3 ? Years left on deal .
I don’t know . If Canes can’t extend Rant then yes it’s a crap trade but not completely disasterous imo.
I hope Rant goes somewhere to the highest bidder ( west conference ) as a mercenary .

I’m not sure why I thought Necas was extended for 5 years. You are right. He signed a 2 year, 13m deal. Carolina has Necas only one additional year. This trade makes way more sense for them than I originally thought. If they resign him (skeptical that owner would shell out the big bucks given his history and their self-imposed cap) then the trade is a homerun. They clearly are going for it but unless they upgrade their goaltending, I just don’t see a long run in them.

Borgen stinks lol
hes been pretty good so far in 2025

Obviously the team is winning but he has been near the top in these player games scores for many of the games in this stretch if you look at the individual game breakdowns

We will see if it continues

That Borgen deal is bad

Like, not franchise killing obviously, and if you squint you can see the logic, but my complaint with all these extensions is the same: who is outbidding you on that guy? You’re bidding against yourself right no why are you getting f***ed?
