Apparently the protection parameters around the 1st round pick was the hurdle on the Rangers deal that killed it.

The Carolina and NJ stuff still seems like smoke to get Drury to move off whatever is holding up the trade. Based on the reporting the timeline looks a lot like this.

-Canucks lose to the Kings on Thursday, Miller has bad game and Canucks brass believe they have to get the deal done soon.
-It was about 1pm on Friday the Devils rumors popped up from Canucks friendly people.
-According to Friedman on 32thoughts, things progressed with the Rangers a Friday evening where the sides think a deal is close
-Saturday morning Miller is told he might be held out of the game, while the Rangers scratch the prospects.
-By that night the deal is off and Miller plays. So do Chytl and Lindgren
-Now hearing Carolina’s name

It sure seems Carolina is now the stalking horse to push the Rangers deal through now that most see the NJ stuff is BS.

I had read that Vancouver wanted Lafreniere and Schneider. I can’t see the Rangers moving Lafreniere so soon after moving Kakko. I could see them moving Chytil if they don’t trust his concussion history. Schneider is decent but doesn’t seem like the sort of player you can’t replace.

Laf I can see having a resurgence in a new environment ala Kakko, but Schneider is just a younger, more handsome Trouba. Seems underwhelming for VAN unless they’re retaining a good amount.

lol these guys stink at trade valuations

Reminds me of this story from Phil Esposito's autobiography. Tampa was originally owned by a mystery Japanese group but they were looking to sell in the mid-90's. The Maloof brothers (they would buy the Sacramento Kings and eventually had minority stake in the Golden Knights) were interested and it got to the point where they sent some crony to sit in hockey ops meetings. At some point the guy chimes in with "Hey you guys should really try to trade for Paul Kariya" and Esposito had to diplomatically tell him that they didn't have the assets / Anaheim wasn't going to trade him.
