Around the NHL 2024-25 regular season Part II

Seems terrible

dang i figured he would've had some good stats the recent season/s to warrant that deal but thats not the case. goes to show you how desperate teams are for goaltending.

if you have kids playing hockey tell them to play goalie. sure its expensive with the equipment but theres a major shortage!

“If X does this thing he’s never done, it’s a fair deal” is not a thing you say about good deals.

I’ll eat crow on this one if the need arises, and he manages it, but I just don’t understand the thought process. What has he done to justify 5x5.25? Who else is putting that on the table even if he ends the year strong? Why do you need to lock up a guy who is a career jobber 4 games into his tenure with your team?

He's clearly got incredible ability, he just has not been able to put it together for a full season. It's not a deal I would sign, but you can't find a goalie with this amount of ability for this cheap. If they can fix him, they have an excellent goalie signed through his prime.

There are definitely teams that would put that on the table if he ended the year strong. (Ignoring that Blackwood isn't UFA this year, he is arb-eligible and a year away from UFA).

Out of the teams that were expected to get good soon after going through tough rebuilds (Buffalo, Detroit, Ottawa, etc), we are one of the few that has come through on the other side with a team that looks like it can consistently contend.

I’m more than a little proud of that, maybe inordinately so.

You know, just watching highlights for my review of overrated Oettinger last night and seeing what his recent extension was, now I’m not so shocked at what Blackwood got.

Realistically, Oettinger is probably worth about what Blackwood just got (maybe $6 million per) which would mean Blackwood is definitely worth less.

Oettinger is highly overrated though.

Swayman got the same deal Oettinger got and prior to Oettinger getting it. Swayman has been better than Oettinger (I know he’s not having a good year), but was doing it in a 1b tandem, while Oettinger has played a workhorse workload (by today’s standards) which is maybe the most flattering thing I can say for him. I don’t see him as elite.

There probably aren’t top-10 goalies anymore, just top-5. And I don’t at all see Oettinger as a top 5 goalie.

This makes me realize that giving up a first-round pick for Markstrom wasn't an overpay.

Yzerman got shit for the Walman move but I really don’t think he got nearly enough. On principle it’s one of the dumbest moves we’ve seen in a while

I really thought for sure it was part of a 3 way trade when it was announced. I don't understand why you would just ship Walman away for no reason, much less trade an asset with him. Bizarre.
