Around the NHL 2024-2025

The hilarity of the Maple Leaf’s situation is that there is a plausible argument to be made that they may very well be the second best team in the entire NHL; and they’re now going to cut off their nose to spite their face and let Marner walk and subsequently become a less talented team.

It’s amusing to me that they’re all but forced to now make major changes despite the fact that this may be the best team they’ve had in decades. You hate to see it…but…Dave Chappelle gif.

They were just a poorly constructed team with some really good players. Any of their big 4 would be main pieces on a cup team. Them not doing anything to re-allocate resources to defense during the last decade is inexcusable for their entire front office. To do nothing about fixing their roster and then do nothing when their quality pieces are walking out the door is why they will remain losers.

In what world could you argue that the Leafs are the second best team in the NHL?

Looking at the entirety of their roster, they own a very unimpressive D core and goaltending tandem, and their insistence that those positions don't matter as much as high-end talent is a major contributor towards their downfall. They're also not the victim of the current playoff format given that they have lost to variety of teams in recent years (Capitals, Bruins, Blue Jackets, Canadiens, Lightning, and Panthers). Does anyone really think they would have beaten any other team outside of Florida in a 7 game series this year?

I said a plausible argument could be made… especially if they end up being the only team that pushed the Panthers to the brink of elimination.

I never said it was a good argument. Just that one could be made.

I feel like I’ve underestimated the Oilers
I think they are the 2nd best team in hockey. Unfortunately, I think the Cats are the best and they have to play them again. Maybe they win, maybe they don’t, but damn the Cats are solid. Losing Reinhart and Mikkola could change that.
