Around the NHL 2024-2025

Yeah I have a hard time believing it was really all about that extra $250k that Rants wanted. Avs are already all in, letting your star winger go never made much sense.
Colorado's last offer to him before the trade was $11.65M and it has been reported by tons of sources that Rants was asking for $13M+ from Colorado. He was also still asking for $13M from Dallas on the morning of the trade deadline, but ultimately accepted $12M x 8 at the last minute before losing the ability to get an 8 year deal from anyone but Carolina. Colorado had no way of knowing that he'd eventually cave on his number and there is a very real chance that he wouldn't have caved on that number on deadline day if Colorado hadn't made the trade. And while I think the estimated actual tax savings are almost always inflated, there is no doubt that a $12M AAV in Dallas, Texas puts more money in your pocket and greater purchasing power than $12M AAV in Denver, Colorado. Who knows if $12M would have been the number that he'd ultimately have accepted from Colorado and there is a real chance that Colorado would have needed to leave him unsigned at the deadline and negotiate after the season ended to reach his true walk-away number.

The Avs and Rants were way more than just $250k apart.

Thanks, I saw it reported as marginal, as little as $250k sometime in the aftermath of the trade and didn’t look much more into it. So I probably shouldn’t have parroted as gospel! I’d still argue that the Avs should tried everything in their power to sign him given where they are in their window, but clearly they decided any savings was worth it. Not that they could’ve possibly known he’d end up in the division a couple months later.

This is the estimated difference

Over 8-Year Contract: $204,600 × 8 = $1,636,800 more take-home pay in Texas.

Personally I would think that's not enough of a difference to give a shit.

Just guessing loosely on tax rates per area, this is the total take home Rantanen would've had in either area:

Denver -> $6,187,955.28 x 8 = $49,503642.20 (per the reported 11.65 mil)
OR -> $6,372,438.53 x 8 = $50,979,508.20 (if CO offered 12 mil)

Dallas -> $6,439,638.53 x 8 = $51,517108.20 (per 12 mil)

Incredibly rough estimate using only state and federal taxes, but seems stupid to 1) trade him when it sure feels like there was a path forward and 2) stupid for Rantanen to be so firm on 13 mil till the last second.

Watching Dallas vs WPG and realizing neither of those teams has a chance against EDM. I sure hope FLA comes out of the East and can take those chumps down. LA and the stupid Byfield play let them off the mat, just like the dumb Buch play let WPG off the mat.

Dallas can beat EDM. They haven't looked as strong as I thought they might, but they could still beat the Oilers.

dallas is winning the west. this series is going 100% as i expected (dallas in 5). They could win the cup depending who comes out of the East.

the blues however would have made this a 6 or 7 game series. Winnipeg is truly overrated and their goaltender is a large reason they will be golfing soon.

Man, I thought maybe, MAYBE HellaSuck surviving the first round would give him some confidence to get settled and go on a little run…nope. Holy balls he sucks.

Never thought I’d be this happy to see Dallas winning. This series is over.

Winnipeg just isn’t that good and I’m thrilled to see them with another early exit. I used to like them but they shouldn’t even be here, and they clearly lack high end talent. If Connor doesn’t have the puck, they’re not scary.

Blues would've actually made it a series. The clownshoed Jets are only a threat when they have a man advantage.
also not the sign of a cup quality team when you cant win on the road in the playoffs.

they are 0-5.

Stars in control and have a clear path to win the Cup. Good for them. I tried hard to find flaws and found some, but they’ve been able to overcome them. The Stars defense is obviously their weakness; even with Miro.

Stars and Hurricanes in the Final.

Crazy to think that the two teams involved in the 2nd Rantanen trade could be the teams in the finals.

I remember everything destroying the Canes over that trade and I for one thought they did great with that trade to maintain that core and their team. Picked up couple young players and couple of 1st round picks.

Not that crazy really, both those teams were already very good and considered cup contenders prior to making the trades, Dallas more so than Carolina but the East was always wide open for making a run. That said, I see whoever wins Toronto/Florida in the finals.

Edmonton is way too volatile of a team to say no one has a chance against them. I think that they have more game-to-game variance in their quality of play than any team left in the playoffs. Their current #1 goaltender is 1-3 in this year's playoffs with an .857 SV% and he was that team's undoing in 2022/23. He was 'good enough' in last year's playoffs, but he has a track record of giving multiple games away each round. The goalie who earned them 6 of their 7 wins so far is too hurt to practice and is a career journeyman. Edmonton is a contender with McDavid and Drai on the roster, but they are far from an unstoppable lock for the Final.

We must be watching different Dallas teams. I see an elite goalie being his usual elite self in the playoffs and a team that is largely squeezing the life out of the 1 seed. They don't look dominant, but they are expected to get their #1 D man back for the Conference Final and they already beat a Colorado team that plays a similarly high speed/event game to Edmonton. I don't have much faith left in the Jets, but if they come back from down 1-3 it almost certainly means that Helly looks like the Vezina guy, which would give me some reason to believe that they could shut down the Oilers. Either will have home ice against the Oilers.

Yeah but I remember bunch of national just giving to Hurricanes for trading Rantanen after acquiring him (similar to how national viewed Blues acquiring Fowler) . Another old defenseman.

Why would trade Necas & Drury for Rantanen and then trade him away. They just destroy their team. I remember seeing that all over. They acquired good young forward, 2 1st and 2 3rd.... I was thinking they helped their team for the now and future.

USA blew a 5-1 lead against Norway but then Tage Thompson won it in OT. Stian Solberg, the guy I wanted last year instead of Jiricek, with the hat trick for the Norwegians.

Solberg is gonna be a good one. He stood out for me in the WJC last year, then his performance at the WC last year blew me away.

Curious what his ceiling will be.

Heiskanen actually played 14:52 last game
