Around the NHL 2024-2025

Marner and Dobson were my targets, but not anymore. We don’t need a wing anyway. It was a silly want. Dobson? Maybe. Marner? MosDef heyo naw.
I think I'd currently Rather go after some smaller game on the back end like Fabbro/Perbix in UFA unless there's a way to move out Faulk. Weirdly enough (and I f***ing hope I'm wrong) I think the Blues may try to look at Dougie Hamilton (who Dobson reminds me of, and probably why I'm so against Dobson in general) with the possibly rift between the club and Hamilton. I am not a fan of Hamilton and I think it will end up being a bad decision if they do try to go that direction.

The only thing I want seeing being brough in on the forward side is a Center. We have wingers and winger prospects for days. I'm not trading for a winger or signing one.

I agree. I’ve come down off my wing high. Too much honey spice.

We need a center and a D. I think Perbix is prolly the best fit on D. Byram would be great as well. We need two long-term RHD and Byram is quite comfortable playing his offside, although not optimal.

I think we will enter camp with another two really good defensemen.

Flipping brutal comments....LMAO

Go Big D!! Would actually like to see a Dallas vs Carolina finals. Probably see EDM vs FLA rematch though.

Yeah, I would much rather see a Rantanen trade final with Carolina vs Dallas. Just twisting the knife in Colorado's back lol

I honestly thought the Leafs were gonna pull it off last night, but clearly their star players don't have what it takes to win big games.

Didn’t Armstrong say at his end of the season press conference that the top 4 is likely going to be the same going into next season with a desire to add a two-way player (insinuating a top 6 forward)?

Hamilton would be interesting, but only if they took Faulk+ back in the deal or we were able to move Faulk elsewhere. I’d be pretty happy going into next season with Fowler-Parayko and Broberg-Hamilton as our Top 4, even just for how I think Hamilton would help our PP.

This is what happens when you're top loaded. 4 players (all forwards) can't win you a Cup. Looking at the Leafs' roster, there is one player I would be thrilled about picking up from them. It's just the core 4, a ton of JAGs, and then Knies. They got all of two points out of their TDL acquisitions this playoffs, and they gave up all of their draft capital and 2/4 of their top prospects for the privilege. Is anyone expecting Cowan and Danford to right the ship for them? They can't afford to go full rebuild, but if they lose both Marner and Tavares to free agency, what's left? Sam Bennett? If it was going to happen for them, it needed to happen this year.

Toronto should be able to keep 2/3 of Knies, Tavares, and Marner.

Tavares is at 11 aav and Marner is at 10.9. Seems like they’ll be choosing between these two.

Knies’ raise is probably about the same as the cap is raising, which means Toronto should have about 11 mil in cap space. A contending team can do a lot with that much cap space.

Be interesting to see what happens when a first place team loses a key offensive guy and then the team moves the money to defense? Maybe that will happen.

I still have visions of Hamilton cowering from Ovechkin while going into the corner to retrieve a puck in the 2018 playoffs. I'm not looking to get softer on the backend.

He said the top 4 was fine for now. For now is doing some heavy lifting there. To me, I read it as a change this summer is less likely or even unlikely, but it's certainly on a list of areas to target in the nearish future. Maybe it is this summer with the right opportunity, maybe it's at the trade deadline, or maybe it's something Steen takes on. I broadly agree with that. Another forward should be the more immediate priority, but we should at least listen on RD, but Faulk still has some left in him if we don't find the right deal.

Knies will stay because he's under team control. I won't be shocked if either/both of Tavares and Marner are back too, but at this point, why would they want to stay? "Playing for the hometown team" only gets you so far once the hometown turns its back on you. The recipe clearly isn't working in TOR, and the organization has done just about everything they can for years now to make sure that it does. It's on the core 4 players. To me, they have to let Tavares and Marner go. They can't keep ramming their heads against the wall with the same core.

Marchand apparently was only willing to go to Florida and nowhere else so I don’t give him as much credit for that but the Jones move was very targeted and really smart both for the current and future with Ekblad likely gone.
You can’t help but notice that those minute munchers on bad teams with really poor analytic metrics often look transformed when moved into more solid systems and organizations. Jones as good a case as any. We benefitted from Fowler in this way, and I’d say to a degree back in the day with Bouwmeester if I recall too.

Because Jones didn’t have possession of the puck until his teammate checked up at the blue line
Thanks, I was on a Zoom call with headphones and missed their explanation. AND missing out on info in the Zoom call because I was trying to pay attention to the two at the same time. Sigh

I really thought Berube was going to get a good effort out of that team for Game 7. Not guaranteed win, but like an OT ending or something. Man that 4th goal was deflating. I thought they had a shot of tying it up prior to that.

I think healthy Stolarz would have been an upgrade. But they couldn’t win the possession war.

Exactly. I was thinking about Fowler too when I thought of Jones. Fowler/Jones/Rantanen clearly the best in-season moves this year.

Curious where people like Thallis stand on the Leafs situation where they averaged 23rd in the NHL standings from 2013-2017 and garnered Reilly/Nylander/Marner/Matthews who have won nothing of substance....yet there are some posters on our board who insist that you need a slate of high end draft picks to win Stanley Cups. The fact is that there are many ways to build Cup-caliber playoff rosters. To insist on only doing it one way is simply flying in the face of reality.
