I don't like it either and I'd rather hear the guys on the ice. I think that's partially why they do it though, they probably don't want you to be able to hear the guys on the ice.

Something was mentioned during the last Sabres scrimmage that the arena would have noises as well. Part of the reason given was to keep coaches from being able to hear the other bench.
