''Boys, i think i f***ed up"

jumped-getting-jumped.gif

"It's okay guys, Florida is like, really good. Let's just do our best."

Everytime I see Bobrovsky in the handshake line I remember a few years ago many in the hockey community were calling his contract an anchor. People were saying never pay goalies this much money, you never know what you get, this and that.

What an absolute turnaround from that time. There is no goalie I want over this guy in a playoff series. He’s so good it’s unbelievable how he’s able to perform at this standard every single game. Machine. Always calm, always in control.

I'm honestly shocked the Canes managed to win one game this series. Florida when they turn it on are quasi-unstoppable. I don't see how the Oilers can beat them(esp without Hyman) if they make it to the Finals.

Props to Carolina for getting to where they did. They got their asses handed to them, but they lost Pesce, Teravainen, Skjei, Noesen and Tony D. It's not easy to replace all that depth in one off season and Carolina getting as far as they did is a testament to how Brindamour is getting the most out of the roster, even in a weak division.

They've got multiple first rounders to play with the next few seasons, a shit ton of capspace, and a decent mix of vets and young guys to build around going forward. Their best forward is only 27, their best defender is signed to a team friendly deal, and with some smart moves, they can be back in the ECF next year

Brad Treliving had a press conference this morning.

Treliving said the Leafs "keep getting the same result, the DNA has to change"

However Treliving also said "Let's all take a step back and take a deep breath"... "There's not a hockey tree to pluck a player like Marner off of"... "I'm a huge John Tavares fan".

It is hilarious to me but I honestly believe Treliving is planning on running the core four back again.

It is so embarrassing to see a fan base filled with such hatred for Marner and disgust at the thought of re-signing Tavares meanwhile the GM can't come out and say that's it we are letting them both go. How hard is that to say or do? The fanbase would be 100% behind him. Instead he is saying the DNA needs to change but also toying with the idea of keeping the same players. Laughable.

I wonder if they try to move Matthews and keep Marner.

I think part of Marner's issue is that he's always been second banana. If they come to him and say you will be the top paid guy on the team and get the C, I wonder if he would stay.

Matthews has a NMC, but if he gives the Leafs 3-5 teams, I'd imagine that those teams would have zero problem making a Matthew Tkachuk type trade around Matthews. Teams will view it that it is a once in a generation chance to get a franchise C in their prime without drafting them, and attribute the failures to win to the pressures of Toronto, or problems with the organization.

I'm going to call it now. Kucherov for Matthews.

Interesting,

I have read that Matthews injured his back in training camp and was visiting doctors in Europe throughout the year. Apparently this was in order to maintain a certain level of playing shape without missing significant time nor undergoing the full procedure that would be needed to fully fix the problem.

This might have been conjecture as I read it on the leaf boards, plus it makes no sense if he injured his back in training camp that he wouldn't have addressed the problem at that point and come back later in the season fully healthy.

The point I am getting at is that I think Matthews had an off year due to injury problems and a fully healthy Matthews is worth way more than Marner and more than Kucherov who is 4 years older already into his thirties.

If Marner does re-sign, he will probably take less and the media will sell it as he went to free agency, received way better offers and took less to stay in Toronto.

It sort of “fixes” what started all the Leafs fans resentment towards Marner in the first place. Otherwise I don’t see how it would work.

Mind you I still think he’s leaving. But I think there’s a solid argument for re-signing Marner and instead trying to move Nylander for some players. It’s always gonna be difficult to lose a 100 pt player for nothing, playoff disappointments aside.

I think you're right that if Marner takes a hometown discount it would be easier to swallow for Leafs fans and would remove some resentment.

But I think the larger population of fans is just sick of Marner's soft play in the playoffs when it matters most. Nylander on the other hand performs well in the post-season and just came off of a 45 goal-84 point season. Plus Nylander scored 40 goals the previous two seasons as well. To me, Nylander is the more valuable player.

It all depends on what the final roster looks like imo.

Personally I wouldn’t look at it as whether you keep Nylander or Marner. It would depend on a) what you can get for Nylander given he has a NMC (if he’d even waive) b) what amount you could sign Marner for assuming he was willing to stay and c) what free agents are wanting to sign with Toronto.

If the team constructed in the scenario where you move Nylander and re-sign Marner is better, that’s what they should do. It does you no good if Marner walks and then you end up overpaying a bunch of mediocre players in free agency instead because the best guys don’t want to come.

I see what you are saying, it maximizes the overall value retained to trade Nylander and re-sign Marner.

I think Toronto needs Sam Bennett, but not at 10 mil a year.

I think Marner will leave the Leafs, it's just too much bullshit to put up with their media, fanbase & exposure. Why not go somewhere where people care less about hockey & enjoy your life, your family in comfort, he clearly can't compete in playoff hockey when the going gets tough? I bet the Leafs replace him with a bigger tougher player who can still produce .

Florida did exactly to Carolina what I thought they would & it's how you beat skill & speed, they purposely targeted their small skilled players & repeatedly went after them all over the ice, in scrums even on the way to the bench & they targeted the goalie too whenever the opportunity presented itself. Not so much that it would cause a penalty although occasionally it did, but enough to rattle them, take them off their game & make them think twice. The refs are not going to call everything especially as series progress past four games & teams have to stand up for themselves otherwise it creeps into the room & it's impossible to ignore regardless of what JM thinks.

Yep. That’s what a lot of Leaf fans were saying when Tavares was signed as well, namely that JT was offered more, so the Leafs got a bargain LOL.

Bennett elbows the back of Andersen's head. This dirtbag positions himself so that his elbows can cause as much damage as possible.

Before Florida's forecheck or anything else, the leeway their rats are given from the DoPS is why they've made 3 straight finals.

Oh and F*** Carolina for being so shite
Svechnikovs run at bob was way way way worse.

Bennett might be my favorite player in the league. I know he would never come here but id move heaven and earth to get him on the sens. Would fit so well with the identity they are building around brady.

Florida's 4th line is what I want Ottawa to try and do next year. Big, fast, heavy playing in a straight line. Nosek and Sturm are both UFA's both play center both should be had for cheap thats who I hope they target for 4th line C.

If the Panthers go 1-3 in the Cup finals and only come away with 1 Cup, still a great team and a good run but it’ll be a “good for them” and not “what a great team that was.

Legacy for them in this final is it Could be a Boston thing where you recognize what a great team it was with 1 Cup vs. A Tampa where your legacy is one of one of the best teams of the modern era with Chicago and L.A., Pitt.

The whole point is that Bennett has a sustained history of doing shit like this. Svechnikov does not. It's a pattern with Bennett and one off with other players/examples.

I want no part of a player who's success relies on not being disciplined by the DoPS. If we had a semi-competent DoPS, Bennett and several Panthers players are suspended for most of the playoffs. Not to mention, we don't need a centre that relies on the PP to score, can't PK, and has broken 50 points once in his career when league scoring is quite high.

Let some other GM overpay for him.

Do you think this year's Cats are better than last year? Oilers took them to game 7 after being down 3-0 and they still only lost by 1 goal. Drai was playing with a broken rib, Kane couldn't even finish the series. Oilers are a better team this year and Ekholm will be returning, Kane is healthy. This year, they have 18 different goal scorers. Last year 46% of the goal production came from McDrai, this year it's something like 18%. Yes, they'll miss Hyman but Brown will be back. I don't see the Oilers going down 3-0 this time. It's hard to judge Florida's game when they've been playing weaker opponents. TBL goaltending was mediocre, TML can't finish, Carolina looked paralyzed and had shaky goaltending. If Skinner falters, Picard is back. Oilers play a similar game (clog neutral zone, forecheck). McDavid is now on the PK, Drai is on a shutdown line. If Oilers can wrap it up tonight, it'll be a great series.
