Around the NHL — Episode XLXVII

...

...I'm going to try not to be snarky. Clearly I am referring to income tax, as that is what makes Texas an attractive destination for hockey players.
Even then, The US doesn't have a federal sales tax so while Dal do have an 8% sales tax, Alberta residents still have 5% HST as a result of the Federal sales tax.

Not that Sales taxes are a real deterrent to UFA, for one, you don't see it coming off every pay check so psychologically it doesn't have the same impact, but also it's a pretty regressive tax, multimillionaires don't really feel the impact of it.

Nice hard-fought win from Edmonton. Calgary was my team before the Senators joined the league so it's not a bandwagon I can jump on, but at the same time, f*** Dallas and their zero-tax state pulling in all the good players.

There was a time the comments were you can’t win in Florida because the players have it to easy going to work in flip flops and no media that cares and the fans don’t know what they are watching so don’t know if you’re playing hard. they said it was hard to motivate the players in sunny spots without any pressure from fans or media

Looks like they found a way.... Who could've guess it was money all along :sarcasm:

I know, big difference… but image Ontario with no sales tax… I would welcome the savings

On big ticket items, like the vehicles or houses players buy, 13% in Ontario vs 5% in Alberta is a welcome savings I’m sure… not a deal breaker for an UFA though…. Ottawa does have the Quality of Life on its side I suspect, and as much as the traffic congestion goes, Ottawa is scoring higher marks than the two closest NHL …. Again not a big issue for some UFAs, but I’m sure it matters to those players with families

Since player have to move in right away and can't wait for construction, they are more often than not buying resales, so won't likely be paying sales tax on a house all that often, and 100k on a nice car is peanuts compared to income tax on a multimillion dollar salary.

the full HST in Ontario on a 100k car is one quarter of a 1% difference in income tax to a 5 mil/yr contract.

Nobody is signing in Alberta because they don't have a PST. It's a none issue to these guys.

I’m gonna be really disappointed if Edmonton loses to Florida. They’re a great team and have been the most fun to watch all playoffs, really wanna see them get the cup.
Agree but for me it just comes down to a Canadian team vs a scummy US team.
I’ve been forced to cheer this way now.

And their top 3 scorers in the regular season are Reinhart with 81 pts, Barkov with 71 pts & MTkachuk with 57 pts & in the playoffs Barkov with 15 pts & Bennet & MTkachuk tied at 14 pts. They are winning with a relentless forecheck, being hard & tough to play against, great defensive play & getting the saves they need at the right times. Ottawa should certainly copy their recipe for success.

Carolina looks rattled.

At intermission, Kotkaniemi needs to stand up and say something.
''Boys, i think i f***ed up"
