Around the NHL — Episode XLXVII

It's unlikely that they don't spend to the cap or close to. If they don't re-sign Marner they'll just replace him with another high-priced FA, e.g. by overpaying for Bennett.

If Marner goes and they walk away from Tavares I can absolutely see them throwing a bunch of cash at Marchand and Bennett.

Those would be very Treliving moves.

How different would the narrative around the Leafs be if they were in the Metro?

Probably would’ve made the conference finals this year.

One of the huge things this game in particular was the Panthers immediately breaking up any Toronto breakout in the neutral zone. Saw it over and over, and that's gotta become so frustrating, plus the unrelenting pressure that results, really a masterclass from Florida
Hopefully our coaches have been taking notes.

they would just be the canes where they lose in the conference finals each year

the goal should be to build the best team. You need to face fla at some point and if you can't beat them you aren't going to win the cup.

Yeah but nobody looks at Carolina the way Toronto is viewed. And in fairness the Leafs manage to lose in spectacular fashion so maybe that’s part of it.

Regardless though, if Toronto makes the ECF and then loses against Florida in 7, I think the perception around their season would have been vastly different than it is right now.

the chatter around canes began last year and it will only get worse if they get dominated in this series again.

The markets are very different but there is def chatter that the canes don't have it to win a cup with the current team. That's probably why they wanted rantanen.

I think mostly everyone is in agreement that neither team has what it takes to win.

What I’m questioning is that if the Leafs made the conference finals, would the perception be that they’re close and they need to keep adding as opposed to the current view, which is that they need to subtract and restructure because there is something inherently wrong with them?

Honestly I am not even really "enjoying" this as a rival fan, I just find it almost baffling.

After years of management ineptitude, the Leafs finally do the right thing and rebuild, get 3 elite young players out of it with Matthews/Marner/Nylander...and they all turn out to be prima donnas who demand being overpaid while disappearing in the playoffs. Like that's basically just bad luck rather than building a team poorly like how Leafs management has done in the past.
I think when Dubas added Tavares, a 4th forward with similar skills, for $11M, that's when they all started asking for big money. For me, that was the turning point. Also handing out NMC like candy has caused them issues. I get Dubas, being an inexperienced GM, but Shanahan should've known better (how to build a playoff team). It's like they thought the playoffs would morph into a skills contest instead of the grinding exercise it is.

What a terribly boring series this will be if Florida keeps having their way entirely with the Canes. There's no competition there at all.

I’ve only caught bits and pieces of this series so far, but what the hell is going on with Carolina? Feels like the Sens would put up more of a fight than this. They’re getting dominated in all aspects.

I never thought Shanahan had any business being appointed in the first place. Zippo experience at that kind of job, or any team management, then hires a newbie GM that the agents feasted on.

really hope Staois is watching FLA and how they built their team. We have the Tkachuk and the top centre .....need to make quality trades and build around an identity

Matthew Tkachuk such a great hockey player, such great offensive awareness and I.Q. And great hands but he really just makes the simple play available to him and he makes it perfectly. Pass, finish, tip, just keeping a puck alive he is a great passer and makes something outta nothing. That opening goal was all him, 2 simple plays and his finish on his goal is textbook go to the net with your stick on the ice. Great player, what a trade for Florida. One of the best trades ever, Cam Neely level steal.

Florida is one of the slowest teams in the league, yet look how dominant they are.

Florida is showing how you beat speed & skill with a relentless forechecking that never seems to let up & they support each other all over the ice. They never seem to take a break & play the same way every minute of every period & take away time & space constantly.
They don't care about scoring, that will come & it does, they don't care about taking penalties, they will happen & they attack during the penalties too. Ott at times can play this way & when they do they do well, they just need to keep it up, it seems to be the formula to win in the playoffs & Florida has a lot of playoff experience.
