Around the NHL — Episode XLXVII

I'm betting Marner signs in SJ so he can drink margaritas on the beach and make tiktoks with Smith and Celebrini

Nice of Florida to pump Toronto's tires. Are they just hoping they run it back again, for the easy playoff wins?

That's ironic since he is literally the captain. The captain flies the plane the rest of the people sit in the back.
Wow these guys are the absolute worst. A new low for them.

Forward Mitch Marner agreed with Matthews' sentiment.

"That's the right wording I would say, as well," Marner said. "Can't have passengers in a Game 7. We all gotta hold ourselves to a higher accountability."

Matthews and Marner were held off the scoresheet in the loss. They each posted a minus-2 rating and two shots.

Has there historically been a core who failed to win but was given as much runway as the Leafs?

It took Washington a decade or so to get past the second round in the Ovechkin era.

This was a 7 game series on paper, but it didn't feel like one. Leafs won the first two games, but since then the series has seemed lopsided. Florida outscored them 19-8 from game 3 onwards. It seems like the Leafs just collapsed after failing to go up 3-0 in OT.

Definitely Ovie and Backstrom. It took them 11 years to get out of the 2nd round. Even then, they needed a Vezina calibre goalie (Holtby) and top 5 Norris voting defender (Carlson) to finally get through. Having said that ,Ovie and Backstrom still produced in the playoffs, just not as much as their regular season production. The drop off isn't as bad as it is with Matthews and Marner

Meanwhile, Connor and Leon are dragging Nurse and Skinner to conference finals.

You just know Marner is going to go to a new team and start performing in the playoffs.

Leafs are in a lose-lose situation with Marner. He’s going to demand $13M+ from them, and it certainly feels like he’s worn out his time with the Leafs. However, how do you just let a 100 point guy walk? I get playoffs are important, but how much of a hit does the team in the regular season standings take losing a guy like that?
Because Marner either fits or he doesn't. If they keep him they are going to have to pony up around 12-13M. If they don't and he walks they can use that cap space to sign any other big ticket UFA in the league to change the chemistry of the team. Sure, if you planned to not re-sign him then you would prefer to move him earlier when you could get a bunch of pics and likely a few great players. That ship has sailed. Cap space is an asset given most teams that are contending (pretending?) will spend to the cap. The 'Shanahan' issue they've suffered from for so many years is that they refuse to acknowledge an issue with the core 4 and just keep rolling it back. I'm no fan of Dubas, but in his defense it is common knowledge that Shanny hamstrung him year after year. My personal wish would be the Leafs continue to rinse, lather and repeat, repeat the same stupid things going forward. Looking at it rationally (they have yet too), you can't keep doing the same thing and expect different results.

I find it odd, but not unexpected, that so many Leafs fans and media are talking about "getting rid of Tavares" because he is one of the core 4 and his contract is up. Given his age he could likely be enticed to stay for less money and term. He has not been their problem IMO, often showing up when the 3 primadonnas don't. The other 3 are streaky. selfish and show zero oomph in tough times.

I heard a loud implosion noise last night that shook the ground beneath me around the end of the Leafs/Panthers second period. Does anyone know what it was?

Poured one out for @BlueAzN last night :sarcasm:

Leafs aren't going anywhere with Matthews as captain, the guy has the personality and passion of a blank wall.

Leafsnet is fckn terrible. How do those people sit there and spew such BS? It's unreal.

First they need to get rid of Ron. He's the biggest deadweight at Sportsnet. Ron thinks people want to hear his takes. They don't. He can f*** off to retirement.

.. you mean the homesy little stories about the pond in piddlepick, somewhere are getting really, really, old. Supposedly he is an excellent producer, he should embrace that.

Morgan Reilly sucks too. I’ve watched so many big games and he’s sucked in all of them, he sucked last night too. Has a potatoe for a face as well.
