Around the NHL — Episode XLXVII

It's not the people on the panel that are Toronto focused. It's Sportsnet wanting them to be Toronto focused. Swapping out the panelists isn't going to reboot anything.

I get being homers for the Leafs because it's basically a regional broadcast, but they should have some sort of sports form of DEI, where the label at least has to have on super fan from the other team.

It can't just be Marc Methot breaking down d-zone coverage, it's gotta be the most obnoxious Sens commentator, like Don Cherry if he was born in Carp in 1992.

Matthews, “…too many passengers”

I'd like to think Brady and Travis Green could whip him into shape.

Marner is what he is at this point. You can bully him into performing for a couple of games...but that's not enough in the playoffs.

And it shouldn't be on the captain and coach to motivate a pro athlete into reaching his potential. Especially a guy making double digits int he millions per season.

Like Worldstarhiphop says....I wouldn't trade Bath 1 for 1 for Marner at this point.

Honestly I am not even really "enjoying" this as a rival fan, I just find it almost baffling.

After years of management ineptitude, the Leafs finally do the right thing and rebuild, get 3 elite young players out of it with Matthews/Marner/Nylander...and they all turn out to be prima donnas who demand being overpaid while disappearing in the playoffs. Like that's basically just bad luck rather than building a team poorly like how Leafs management has done in the past.

I want no part of Marner. He doesn't have what it takes to win. Someone else might take a chance on him but no way he commands $11M anymore.

Teams know that the cap is going up to 113.5M in 2 seasons.

Say what you want about the Leafs core, players like Marner are impossible to get outside of drafting them. Is he someone you want to be your #1? No. But if he goes to a team like Carolina who already built and cost controlled a winning core, he isn't being asked to be a primary leader. They already have those.

I think that a team like Chicago, San Jose, or Utah might overpay to get him. I think those scenarios risk being bad, because they are plucking a player out of a losing culture and expecting him to be the face of their team and probably 1A or 1B in their room.

But Vegas, Carolina, etc can take him since they already have their primary leaders.

Look at Eichel as an example of this. He was branded as a loser and part of the problem. He goes to a team that already has Stone and others enforcing a winning culture, and now he is a cup champion.

They have a few more cracks at it, but time is starting to get short. Historically, if you're going to win a Cup it happens when your core guys are much younger than Toronto's are now.

I love you but you are taking a hard L for your prediction of Leafs glory this post-season. But also, I think you're kind of happy to own that L.

The Leafs are the Leafs and will always be the Leafs.

Focusing the core all on offensive guys, all of whom have compete issues. That was the big mistake. If even one core guy was a defenseman or goalie, things would likely be different.

You just know Marner is going to go to a new team and start performing in the playoffs.

Leafs are in a lose-lose situation with Marner. He’s going to demand $13M+ from them, and it certainly feels like he’s worn out his time with the Leafs. However, how do you just let a 100 point guy walk? I get playoffs are important, but how much of a hit does the team in the regular season standings take losing a guy like that?
