Around the NHL — Episode XLXVII

Something tells me they would have had a good chance to win if they just kept the Moose for these playoffs alone. They certainly would have gotten by Dallas at the very least.

They played themselves. They moved Rantanen presumably to not lose him for nothing, then proceeded to give up multiple 1st+2nd round tier assets for UFAs.

Personally, rooting for the Oilers. Would like to see McDavid and Connor Brown win the Cup. I'd also like Winnipeg but I don't believe they can. So if not Edmonton, go Dallas

They're better than us in certain ways, being able to dump and chase like demons, and better defensive structure. They're slower than us, though, and somehow even worse in controlled entries. I do think their playstyle and lack of assets means they're going to be on the downswing sooner than later.

Yeah I disagree about Florida not being much better than Ottawa... maybe for actual ice results but on paper, it's not even close...

Barkov > Stutzle
M. Tkachuk > B. Tkachuk
Reinhart >> Batherson
Marchand > Giroux
Verhaeghe >> Perron
Bennett > Cozens
Lundell > Pinto
Samoskevich < Greig
Rodrigues > Amadio
Jones < Sanderson
Forsling > Chabot
Ekblad > Zub
Mikkola > Jensen

Plenty of GMs with poor foresight.

Tavares was never going to produce his contracts worth and had maybe one year where he produced at a rate to justify the cap hit. Leafs had centre depth and made the contract for Matthews stupidly high by signing Tavares to $11 million.

If San Jose signed him to $12-13 million, that would've been a horrid move. Dubas should've let someone else waste their cap on him.

In Toronto's case it was maybe not the best move because they needed to invest in D-men but normally, I'd gladly overpay for a high profile offensive player, particularly for a market that has very little chance of attracting those.

We may be farther ahead in our rebuild then I ever thought we were. We took them to OT 3 times and showed resilience to come back from 3-0 to a close game 6.

We were also playing shorthanded the whole time! On account of the refs clearly favouring Toronto.
Florida is getting the same treatment. Leaf fans complain about the officiating but they are sure benefiting from it in these playoffs.

Toronto seems to get lucky consistently with those type of goals
Getting the luck, winning games they shouldn’t, and winning games they should. Sounds like a good recipe tbh.

I’m not set on Toronto winning this series yet, though. We’ll see how it goes back in Florida. The Leafs have definitely gotten some hometown calls in the first couple of games and Florida will probably get them the next two games. I’d also expect Bobrovsky to improve.

The Sens' defensive structure is starting to look pretty good after seeing how the Leafs are cutting through Florida pretty easily. Toronto is also continuing its faceoff dominance against the Sens into the series against Florida. Though Florida wasn't good at faceoffs all year, and the Sens were excellent, that isn't as surprising.

The NHL is such a shitty league running the best sport in the world.

Bowman and Coach Q being allowed to return to the league is such bullshit. Hope Edmonton and Anaheim never have any success.

Man, I was watching some of that game and idk what Fla was doing... multiple times they got burned by the stretch pass (we made adjustments by game 2), and more than once I was dumfounded by how easily they got walked.

Hate to say it, but I've been really impressed with Toronto. The addition of Tanev this offseason, and then Carlo at the deadline were exactly what they've needed for years now. Between that and getting their forwards to commit to getting in lanes and they've turned a weakness into a strength.

WRT faceoffs, when asked about how we got killed at the dot, Pinto was suggested on Coming in Hot that maybe they weren't getting fully set, thought it was interesting hearing that.

Florida has a relentless and aggressive fore check, but their forwards are so deep that this type of fore check leaves them open to odd man rushes. They rely on their forewards skating back and hustling their way to backcheck but that can get tiring.

Berube just has TML read those odd man rushes and take advantage of it. TML has skilled forwards that can make those stretch passes.
