Around the NHL — Episode XLXVII

At least on paper, this is the best team the Leafs have had in the Matthews-era, plus there's no real "super-teams" this year as competition. Sucks to say, but Leafs got a shot at the Cup this year,
Treliving did an unbelievable job getting the core 4 a legit supporting cast. Unreal how badly Dubas wasted all those years for them.

We may be farther ahead in our rebuild then I ever thought we were. We took them to OT 3 times and showed resilience to come back from 3-0 to a close game 6.

We were also playing shorthanded the whole time! On account of the refs clearly favouring Toronto.
FLA can't win a faceoff either. I swear it looked like they were cheating in the draws some of the time and not putting their stick down, but they never throw them out so I guess not.

Plus he fumbled the contracts for Nylander, Marner and Matthews. A competent GM would've gotten them on long term deals and not blown his load on Tavares when they already had Kadri

Let’s be honest, any GM would have signed Tavares.
Plenty of GMs with poor foresight.

Tavares was never going to produce his contracts worth and had maybe one year where he produced at a rate to justify the cap hit. Leafs had centre depth and made the contract for Matthews stupidly high by signing Tavares to $11 million.

If San Jose signed him to $12-13 million, that would've been a horrid move. Dubas should've let someone else waste their cap on him.

This is more of a playoffs in general comment, not just the NHL.

The underdog in the second round are all up big on their opponents. Toronto is up 2-0 against the previous year Cup winners, who I thought looked poised to repeat the way they handled the Lightning. Carolina severely outplayed the Capitals in game 1.

In the NBA the Pacers are up 2-0 on the Cavaliers and the bloody New York Knicks are up 2-0 on the Celtics. Comeback wins for each of the four games played. The Nuggets had a comeback win of their own over a ridiculously talented OKC team....

If I was a betting man I would have lost every single one of my choices, so far.

Marner and Mathews look invisible

Yet they’re winning.

Treliving focused on D, adding Tanev, Carlo, OEL and Benoit in his 2 seasons as GM. Big, strong, shot blocking defensemen.

That’s turned their team around (playoff-wise).

We spend a lot of time talking about finding a winger to play with Stützle, but defense is probably where we should focus as well.

A Chabot - Jensen second pairing probably won’t do it in the postseason.

Chabot looked good in his first playoff series, and Jensen was injured, so he gets a pass.

We got Yakemchuk coming up, and we only had two games in the playoffs where we scored more than 2 goals, getting another high-end winger is still the top priority.

It’s easy to focus on D when you have three of the most offensively gifted players in the league.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m on the upgrade the defense train too, but we’re not close to Toronto offensively.

I actually get it. They had no depth. I doubt they will win again but not sure that was happening with Rantanen either.

Edit: Lmao another goal. Unreal
Something tells me they would have had a good chance to win if they just kept the Moose for these playoffs alone. They certainly would have gotten by Dallas at the very least.
