Around the NHL — Episode XLXVII

Yes Bennett is an absolute piece of shit. I hate how he plays, but I’d probably love him on our team.

My first reaction to the replay was, “is that it?”

Not surprised there isn’t a suspension.
Let's sign Bennett and Marchand in FA.

Tkachuk, Bennett, Marchand, Greig, Perron, Cousins, Kleven, (to an extent) Matinpalo

POS squad!

Now some talk that Stolarz suffered a concussion on the shot from Reinhart in the first. 25sec after there is an "involuntary head shake" that is apparently a 72% indication of concussion.

He should have been put in the concussion protocol at that point. Bad on the spotters to miss it.

Wilson is so dogshit. Maybe if he focused on the actual game of hockey instead of trying to grab players mouth guards, he'd get on the scoresheet

Oilers can practically score at will. Really sucks that goaltending will probably do them in at some point.

Connor Brown has 4 playoff goals.

The Sam Bennett trade is so friggin bad - how do GMs get these jobs if they can’t evaluate talent at all?

Boy, imagine where this team would be if we still had Connor Brown and Nick Paul. Pretty much the perfect depth we are looking for.

Losing Nick Paul is upsetting because we ended up paying Joseph a similar amount to what Paul was supposedly asking for. So it wasn't so much a money thing, as a pro scouting choice not to pay Paul.

It worked out well for him, because he upped his value after the Tampa playoff run and based on the reported numbers from an unnamed executifve, got a much more lucrative contract with Tampa than he was asking for from Ottawa.

They did sell high on Connor Brown and there was no guarantee he would stay here. Part of selling high was that he got unlucky with a bad injury. He also was used in a much greater role here because we were a basement team with no top end depth. It's the opposite of Paul, who we sold low on just as he was putting it all together.

Nick Paul wanted to stay, we could afford him, the fans wanted him, his value Wasnt great on the trade market - and yet we still traded him for basically nothing.

I think this is one example of why Pierre Dorion isn’t in an NHL a front office, neither is that weird Murray kid, or that creepy guy we had at the draft in Buffalo. That entire front office is unemployed in the NHL and they were all young.

But man, could those guys eat wings. In that front office, chicken wings didn’t stand a chance, they sucked them, they brushed their teeth with them, they dipped them. God did they dip those chicken wings

I saw that mentioned by some twitter doctor and that’s kinda dumb to be honest. Many goalies shake their head after they put their mask on because it sets it properly on their head. Whenever I played goalie I was doing that multiple times a game and when I put the mask on. If you see someone hit their head at the office and then they shake their head it could indicate blurred vision and at that point you can think it might be a concussion. For a goalie in that specific situation it’s nearly impossible to tell because it’s part of being a goalie and he just put his mask on. Pretty much all goalies do that.

Now it is possible that he had a consussion from the shot or from a previous collision and that would’ve made him that much more prone to a serious concussion if hit again. I just don’t think it’s fair to call out the spotters on that one.

To me it looks like Bennett caught him with a stiff forearm/elbow to the jaw area. That will concuss most people at varying degrees. Fact that he was puking is telling though. He should not be playing for a while that means it’s pretty serious…

You're not wrong, I saw it on twitter. But here's what that individual was talking about:

I understand the skepticism, but when we talk about protecting goalies this has to at least be considered after talking a puck to the head.

Found the tweet. Not a random internet doctor - this is a guy studying concussions.

They were saying on the radio that Stolarz isn't ruled out to play today, I hope that's just gamesmanship because it's absolute negligence if they let him play, the NHL concussion protocol is a 6 stage process after allowing 24 to 48hrs of rest after the diagnosis, and each stage is supposed to be 24 hours,

I'm no doctor, but that shake wasn't involuntary. Seems to be a thing people do a lot as a physical "oh shit, what was that" response. Not necessarily a "has to be a concussion" response.
