Around the NHL — Episode XLXVII

Why do you think goaltending trends is cyclical? It was Quebec goalies, then Swedish, then Finnish, now Russian?

why is that?
Probably some major investments 10-12 years earlier. It's the most expensive position, so some federations probably saw that they weren't producing any and put some money into it at some point, then they let it fall off.

I expect Hockey Canada to invest in goaltending soon.

Depends on who the kids favourite player is. If it's Roy or Brodeur...all the best athletes want to be goalies. If it's Crosby and McDavid...well they play center.

There at no good Czech goalies though.

Maybe Canadian kids liked Hasek. I just used Canadian players as examples. Kids like good players. That's all. That's why I think it's a cycle. Kids want to be like the best player, so they want to play that position. More kids, better kids at the position. Until a player or players become the next stars in a different position and then the kids want to be like that. Maybe the Czech kids wanted to be somebody else. Hmmmm. Who could that be?

I read an article about Canada’s goaltending struggles at some point, and it suggested that other countries have more streamlined programs. So if one goalie coach is doing something, they’re basically talking amongst themselves and everyone starts doing it. In Canada it was (is?) a problem because everyone’s kinda just doing their own thing since there are so many.

So I imagine that plays a part. All the goalies coming up in those programs are getting similar insight/development so when it’s working, the results are there across the board. Then someone else becomes more innovative and that country starts excelling.

Devastating clean hit.
It might be argued that Wilson hit him in the head. Caused basically by Wilson being the taller player. The opponent was not watching where he was going and should have looked up to be aware. However, the NHL is supposedly trying to stop head shots, so although Wilson did not raise his elbow to target the head, he did use his shoulder to hit the player.

I remember when Gryba hit Eller a few years ago. That was a clean hit too but caught Eller unaware when he should have looked up. Eller cut his head when he hit the ice. The refs called it a penalty because of the injury. That should not have been a penalty as Gryba was going after the puck, which he is allowed to do.

Radek Bonk I assume.

The LAK-EDM series is really high on the entertainment value. Almost wish I could cheer for the Oilers in it, but I hated them back in the 80s and their luck in the draft and general mismanagement hasn't endeared them to me since. Really dislike the Kings though too, so just enjoying the ride :D

What is there to dislike about the Kings? I find a lot more likeable than Edmonton personally.

Ref just watched Ekblad throw an elbow to the face of Hagel and decided it was fine, even after it was clear Hagel was injured.
He'll probably get a game for that, which could be a pretty big deal if Tampa win tonight.

Overall, that has been a pretty nasty series. Certainly much dirtier and more physical than Ottawa/Toronto.

Mathew Tkachuk is such a great player, he causes chaos, he hits everything, he targets the other team's best players, he makes plays, he scores, he chirps, he gets under the other team's skin & he is always involved in everything all over the ice. Such a good shit disturber.

I have always thought the way they do offside reviews is such bullshit. Once an entry into a zone is missed nothing bad can happen for the defending team but they play on. If the puck leaves the zone it’s as if nothing happened. But if the attacking team scores the goal the clock rewinds to the infraction. So it’s essentially risk-free time for the defending team, which is not competitively fair. This is especially pertinent when the defending team is killing a penalty or defending a one goal lead at the end of the game. As soon as the call is missed it’s not a fair playing field at all.

The only fix I can think of is a horn goes off from an off ice official as soon as they determine the play was offside. Stop playing immediately. Reset.

Random thoughts as I’m watching the PVR’d Florida TBL game. Calling back a goal after a a minute of zone time after a missed offside is brutal.

Avs on the verge of elimination.

I am genuinely impressed that the Stars are doing this without Heiskanen. They may just pull this off yet.

Personally I can't stand Fiala (slightly less now that he's got rid of the Matthews stache) but overall it's probably mostly just deep-seated and irrational like all team preferences forged in the protoplasm of early childhood.
