Around the NHL — Episode XLXVII

He broke his calf bone mid-season this year, too.
I have never it called this before!
When you consider the level of talent in the league, his age, and the fact that he broke the goal record, it's been one of the great seasons of all time.
It's insane. I am a Gretzky fanatic and not really happy that Ovi broke his record, but he is a machine.

When you think of Crosby and Ovi together, it is fascinating how well they have each held up over time. Crosby just had another 30 goal, 90 point season!

If most of our penalties were legit and the same standard was applied to every play, we the whole night would have been special teams. I mean, whe PK Subban and Nick Kypreos are both siding with the Sens on the officiating being suspect, you know they done f***ed up.
I agree that some calls were BS, but I don't think we lost because of those soft calls.

We lost because we took too many penalties (most of them were legit in my eyes) and because Ullmark was mediocre at best.

How many of the 6 were BS? How many BS calls did TO get? Wait a minute...there where BS calls, but we took too many penalties? How does that work? We all know Ott has to play through refs and schedule etc every playoffs they where ever in. It's not a new thing. It does get old though and the answer of "be perfect to win" is bullshit.

Two of the calls were undeniable imo, Greig crosscheck, and the high stick by Kleven. One more was not something I'd complain about if they were consistent about it (the Batherson crosscheck on OEL) but I thought they could have easily called embellishment when he grabbed his head despite not being hit in the head.

The others were all dubious at best, Stu's hit was in no way boarding, not even remotely close, the Gaudette hit on Matthews was equally pathetic and likely a blatant dive, Batherson's "trip" was just a solid check and battle for positioning. None of those would have been called in any of the other series, not even close.

They also tossed Cozens from the game, likely because he called them out for falling for OEL's embellishment. Refs created the situation that got Cozens tossed through their own awful officiating, though Cozens needs to learn to control that frustration, it serves nobody for him to get tossed.

Goaltending killed us though, not because there were any bad goals, there really weren't, but because sometimes you need to stop the good and even great chances.

The teams mentally fragile with our limited experience so those brutal calls resulting in leafs PP goal to make it 3-1 had a big impact and tilted the ice. Subban was even ripping that boarding call which helps remove the fan bias.

Then if Brady scores his breakaway and we get a huge stop on theirs that’s the difference in the game. Or if both get stopped and Zetterlund shot didn’t hit Stolarz shaft maybe we don’t fall apart.

Mixed feelings if we will see anything different tonight but hope the refs put their whistle away and Stu, Brady, Giroux, Chabot and Ullmark step up because if not this series is an uphill battle coming home down 2-0. I think we need to play better by a wide margin knowing the gap in shooting percentage is astronomical.

I'm with you. It was a softly-called game, especially when you compare to other games before and since in these playoffs, but our guys put themselves in positions where they could get called way too many times.

You could argue that a lot of the penalties wouldn't be called on any given night, but you can always argue the opposite, too, and we toed that line way more often and at far more consequential times than Toronto did.

Ullmark wasn't the main reason we lost, IMO, but with the lack of discipline, the refs tendency towards softer calls, and our awful PK (huge factor), his play was not nearly good enough to give us a chance.

Where were the soft calls on the leafs? You guys are all buying Sportsnet story line. Fckn jokes galore around here.

Nice part of these playoffs is hearing Bérubé (a man I respect) talk about the Sens team and players with a but of admiration and respect

The two calls I thought were bad were Stutzle on Tanev and Gaudette on Matthews.

In the context of how the game had been ref'd and that this is the playoffs, both of those calls were really bad.

The rest of the calls were ok. I didn't really like the first call against Batherson but I'm willing to admit that what he did wasn't ok/I'd be pissed if another player did that to one of ours.

There were 2 on Bath...

Yes, the first one was a bit iffy when I saw it live, but on replay, I think it's a 50/50 call.

Sometimes you get it, sometimes you don't. Like a puck battle, it is about how you deal with the resolution of the 50/50 event.

We are going to get more bad calls, you still have to find a way to win, and a way to not take 6 penalties against a highly skilled team like the Laughs.

Cool. And completely ignores the fact that the same things weren't called on the leafs. Just go to the main boards.

It will be interesting to see if Patrick Roy becomes GM, or if they hire someone who is a figurehead for Patrick Roy who would remain coach but have final say for player personnel choices.

That was sort of the arrangement Roy and Sakic had. Except it seems like they both misinterpreted it. Roy saw Sakic as his own creation that went rogue, and Sakic saw it as he was going to lean on Roy as he learned the job, but he always was going to have the final sale.

Apparently, Sakic blocking Duchene for Zibanejad and Chabot was one do the final straws.

I could see Dorion being good in this role. Roy could be his new Melnyk.

That's the point. Maybe they were penalties in the regular season but nowhere near as bad as what was let go in the Habs-Caps game.

Agreed. Ullmark wasn't awful he was OK. But OK doesn't cut it in the playoffs.

When you give up 6 goals on 6 quality chances you played bad.
