Tarasenko is a better playoff performer than Perron in almost every tangible metric. Tarasenko can score without needing a PP and despite his speed declining, is still a higher IQ player than Perron. He's not afraid of contact (he had 46 hits in 24 playoff games last season).
I'm hyped that Perron has played great as of late, but his actual play and production is between what he's been the last few games and the first few games he's played.
Tarasenko was obviously the bigger talent but I think that despite being younger, he has as much "mileage" as Perron in terms of injuries, etc. I could be wrong but I think they're both at the same stage of their careers, i.e. the rapid decline phase. I have followed Perron since his last season in the Q and always found he was an underrated player. My only worry about his contract was the 2nd year vs age and cap hit. Hopefully with the time away this season, it will allow him to have a bit of a reset and have a good 2nd season with Ottawa.
Tarasenko was good offensively for us but he's never been good defensively and frankly, I think his career is fading away. I would have wanted to put Perron + Amadio money into 1 better player but things are working well currently so no biggie. So it's ok that we didn't re-sign Tarasenko
He has 24 goals.
How the heck is that a 40 goal pace?
Auston has 26 goals in 52 games now, that is a 0.50 GPG which is 41 goals over a 82 games sample
It doesn't account the missed games, it's just to compare his current production rhythm vs a full season, i.e. pace
But in terms of raw numbers due to the games he missed, at his current pace he could score about 7-8 more goals, which would be a 33-34 goals total.
Where would we have been earlier this year when Gaudette was playing up the lineup and scoring if we had Kastelic instead of Gaudette?
We're on our way to the playoffs. Kastelic is on his way to the off season for his second team in the 4C role.
Those guys are contributing. One of our problems the past few years was bottom of the roster players that couldn't score or play higher up for stretches. We currently have guys able to do that and it's helping us be successful
Gaudette is an interesting case. He's not the type of player teams will hire to play 82 games every season but he can fill roster holes when you are a bit short staffed (due to cap constraints).
Everybody would probably rather have a guy like Kastelic as your 4th line Center due to many other aspects than goal scoring but we can't neglect the fact that Gaudette contributed early on. I don't recall everything but he probably made a difference in a few games. Sens are 7-5-1 in the games he scored.
