Around the NHL — Episode XLXVII

I love that Perron and Amadio have stepped it up the last little while, but for the majority of their time here they've been non-factors. They can end up being dead weight for us going forward the same way Holl, Chiarot, Compher, and Copp have been. I'd still rather have Tarasenko for the price he signed for in Detroit than what we paid Perron and Kane is playing really well with Cat.

Having said that, I'm happy that the Wings draft picks just haven't emerged/stepped up to the same extent ours have. Kaspar seems like he could be a key piece going forward but they're missing elite scoring pieces right now.
Perron and Amadio play a far better style of "playoff" game than Tarasenko now does and are well suited for this run. Once Perron sorted out his personal and health issues he has been good and Amadio has been solid defensively all year.

Tarasenko is a better playoff performer than Perron in almost every tangible metric. Tarasenko can score without needing a PP and despite his speed declining, is still a higher IQ player than Perron. He's not afraid of contact (he had 46 hits in 24 playoff games last season).

I'm hyped that Perron has played great as of late, but his actual play and production is between what he's been the last few games and the first few games he's played.

Perron is currently getting like 2 minutes of PP time. His overall ice time is decreasing either because Green is easing him in or he's not the best option for PP1. He's playing down in the depth chart which is good for our overall depth, but he's likely to peak out as 30-40 pt winger for us. I won't be surprised if his ice time decreases even more as depth guys like Zetterlund get a chance to show what they've to.
Perron was never going to be on PP1, so he is slotted where he was expected to slot.

It seems like the fit with Cozens and Bath is a good one so I don't expect him to be moved too soon. I certainly don't see him relegated to the 4th line. Given how his season has gone, he is just getting up to game speed now, I give him a ton of credit for how he has endured his troubles and been a true pro.

It sucks for Zetterlund but he joined a team with the top 3 lines rolling, so he will have to wait it out. His time will come.

They have pretty much been the same statistically in the playoffs, in different roles. More goals for Tarasenko, more assists for Perron.

Tarasenko has a 0.60ppg, 1.43 hits per game (46 from last playoffs and 50 from cup run account for ~55% of his total hits)

Perron has 0.58ppg, 1.50 hits per game.

I think the one thing Perron has had on Tarasenko throughout their careers is his IQ. He is always one of the smartest guys on the ice, knows where to be, where to put the puck.

I think his ES ice time might decrease next year as he gets older, not that he'll be relegated to the 3rd or 4th line.

Patrick Kane won't be around for ever ,, he is still very instrumental especially on the PP; Such a smart , skilled playmaker

Weird thing there is that Detroit has a demonstrably poorer record with Kane in the lineup. They started last season at something like 14-7-3 at the beginning of December, were 8th in the league only 1 point behind Florida, and once Kane finally joined the team they went 2-8-1. And there's been a few other times he's been out since, and their record was always better. They're sub .500 pts% with him overall and in the bonus point era, that's lottery pick territory.

Guy is a cup winning, soon to be Hall of Famer so maybe it's an oddity, but sometimes these guys come in and upset the dynamic of a team. Like "oooh we have Patrick Kane now", and he gets more minutes than he should, or other guys think they need to play to his strengths because he's a legend. He is a legend but that's not who they have right now.

Perron and Amadio were brought in for a specific purpose and they have delivered. Tarasenko was just another shining toy from Dorion.

Would suck to be Austin Matthews and be on pace for 40 goals, play injured all season and still be one of the best players and Captains in the league leading your team to the playoffs every year and be Captin of the 4 Nations and your fanbase still questions your work ethic and winning attitude.

Matthews completely surrounded by the wrong players. They are soft, they don’t play hard hockey and it falls on his shoulders to explain why he’s surrounded by a bunch of soft wingers and Morgan Reilly.

Matthews is in a bad situation in Toronto, like Carey Price in montreal it’s just about making the playoffs and keeping the boardroom happy

A novel take that I might be able to consider if his face alone didn't make me lose all objectivity

Tarasenko was obviously the bigger talent but I think that despite being younger, he has as much "mileage" as Perron in terms of injuries, etc. I could be wrong but I think they're both at the same stage of their careers, i.e. the rapid decline phase. I have followed Perron since his last season in the Q and always found he was an underrated player. My only worry about his contract was the 2nd year vs age and cap hit. Hopefully with the time away this season, it will allow him to have a bit of a reset and have a good 2nd season with Ottawa.

Tarasenko was good offensively for us but he's never been good defensively and frankly, I think his career is fading away. I would have wanted to put Perron + Amadio money into 1 better player but things are working well currently so no biggie. So it's ok that we didn't re-sign Tarasenko

He has 24 goals.

How the heck is that a 40 goal pace?

Auston has 26 goals in 52 games now, that is a 0.50 GPG which is 41 goals over a 82 games sample

It doesn't account the missed games, it's just to compare his current production rhythm vs a full season, i.e. pace

But in terms of raw numbers due to the games he missed, at his current pace he could score about 7-8 more goals, which would be a 33-34 goals total.

Where would we have been earlier this year when Gaudette was playing up the lineup and scoring if we had Kastelic instead of Gaudette?

We're on our way to the playoffs. Kastelic is on his way to the off season for his second team in the 4C role.

Those guys are contributing. One of our problems the past few years was bottom of the roster players that couldn't score or play higher up for stretches. We currently have guys able to do that and it's helping us be successful

Gaudette is an interesting case. He's not the type of player teams will hire to play 82 games every season but he can fill roster holes when you are a bit short staffed (due to cap constraints).

Everybody would probably rather have a guy like Kastelic as your 4th line Center due to many other aspects than goal scoring but we can't neglect the fact that Gaudette contributed early on. I don't recall everything but he probably made a difference in a few games. Sens are 7-5-1 in the games he scored.

Seth Jones -4, 1 point (on the PP nothing at even strength) in 7 GP in Florida

Ottawa matches up well with Florida especially with Ekblad out for the first two games

Im not that scared of anyone in the Atlantic tbh. Not saying we’d be favourites by any means, but I wouldn’t be shocked if we beat any of them either.

Remember when Calgary went to the finals in 2004? They finished 6th or something like that. I remember watching them during the season and thinking "A seven game series against these fckers is going to be hell if they get in." We might be in that spot....

Trump and Putin are talking about a series between the US and Russia. Probably won't happen but it is funny that they don't include Canada in the discussion. Trump and the rest of America is tired of losing to the Canadians lol.

Trump will cheer for Russia

I keep seeing friends and family say "it'd be nice to see more Canadian teams make it". The only team I want to make it outside of our division is CBJ and that's because of their story this season. F*** TML and MTL, the cup doesn't go to countries for me as much as it does the city.
