Around the NHL — Episode XLXVII

Byfield as the centrepiece of a return would make a lot of sense imo.

I think it makes sense in a scenario where Matthews wants out or they choose keeping Marner over Matthews.

I don't think he is the type of player they need but the type of player they need probably isn't available short of signing Bennett. If Bennett gets around 8M, they could pay both Byfield and Bennett with Matthews cap.

They are in a strange situation because on paper they built a great team with a great coach, but it's the same story every year with them. Dominant regular season team, and they either get matched up against a top team in the first round and can't find a way to be better, or they eventually fold like they did last night.

They would still get a good return for Matthews, just not full value.

Rantanen just got two 1sts, two 3rds, and Stankoven. He didn't have a traditional NMC, but because Carolina was only getting that return if he signed with the team it acted similar to a NMC.

Let's say they move Matthews to Vegas/Florida/Tampa for two 1sts, two 3rds, and a good young player on his ELC/RFA years.

Matthews isn't worth what Rantanen got. Dallas paid a premium because a significant portion of his cap hit was retained elsewhere this year. Plus Rantanen has proved a lot more than Matthews has. He's won a Cup.

None of those teams you mentioned have a first rounder available for the next few years. I don't know what good young player on an ELC they have to give up.

A couple of late first rounders many years from now is not going to turn around the Leafs. Sure, the cap space will be useful but who are they going to spend it on?

If AM34 is moved, he's getting a haul of assets, but they won't be as high profile as TML would like just like our initial haul for Karlsson seemed underwhelming before the Sharks pick turning into the 3rd overall.

If Matthews is sent to LA, they need to fit AM34's $13 million caphit and give up some pieces that makes it worth TML's while. They'll give up Byfield or Clarke, but not both. It'll be one of those with an unprotected first round, and someone like Danault + Moore/Feogele + a prospect like Greentree.

If the Leafs trade Matthews, it isn't about a quick turn around. It is admitting defeat and going into a big re-tool or mini re-build.

At the end of the day, draft picks are currency. I don't think they should trade Matthews, but if they trade him for 1st/1st/3rd/3rd and a cost controlled RFA, and then sign two lesser star players, those draft picks they got for Matthews give them ammo to load up at the deadline if they are still a top team. They don't have to use them to draft players. They are currency.

I do think he would get a similar return to Rantanen if he gave them 2-3 teams. It is a good point about his cap hit being retained, but the market for Matthews would be more fluid in the summer because more teams would have cap flexibility to move pieces out to make room for him.

I missed Foote being hired as the Canucks new head coach. He was promoted from asst. coach.

Good I guess?. Foote was a hell of a hard D to play against in his day . He also has some head coaching experience in the WHL

Canucks feel like a weird team to me with the coaching changes and personnel decisions

Irony is Freddy Anderson playing well for the Canes and them advancing to the 3rd round.

This really feels like a Lucy and the football situation.

Worse goaltenders have won the Cup sure but he's been just a little too good so far.

Q.Hughes stated somewhere that Foote was "the best coach" he'd ever had. Have to wonder if thus is somewhat influenced by Hughes being able to sign an extension next summer

Carolina has to be the most forgettable team in the playoffs. I find myself rarely tuning into any series involving them

Ovie has only been out of the second round once, lucky for him he faced an expansion team in the finals or else he would be the biggest fraud in sports.

Hockey story time! My father is 80 and has bluetooth hearing aids. They're like really small ear buds. Hook up to the tv, phone etc. The last Winn/Dal game he asks me "Who's the guy who talks alot and doesn't say anything?" "That's Garry Galley." I replied. He did a slow nod and took them out! "I don't like him." he says. Then proceeds to watch half the game with whatever hearing he has left. I laughed my ass off and he just looks at me says "What?"

You can tell which players really love hockey and who lives and breathes the game by how they are in the playoffs. Marner and Matthews strike me as guys who are just there for the paycheck. They spend more time working on their acting skills for shooting commercials than playing hockey.

The biggest fraud in sports?

He has 77 goals and 70 assists in 161 playoff games. He is the greatest goal scorer to ever live. I don't know what you could possibly be getting at. He is one of the best performers, playoffs or regular season, in the history of the sport.

Marner is a prolific regular season scorer. The way he plays isn't suited for the playoffs. He plays small. He doesn't have any physical aspect to his game and he stays to the outside looping around.

I have never liked the way he looks when he plays. He looks hunched over and makes dumb-headed moves like his 360 no look spin pass on the 3rd goal from last night.

Marner finished 3rd in Selke voting in 2023. That is when I realized that people don't actually watch this guy play and most of the professional hockey writers association just panders to the Toronto market.
