Around the NHL — Episode XLXVII

CBJ has a shit ton of capspace and can extend solid depth guys like Oliver without worrying about having to extend Marchenko, Voronkov, Sillinger, Chinakohv etc., when their next deals come up over the next few years. If this year isn't a fluke, they can go back to being playoff regulars the way they were under Torts.

Frankly, if I was a Blue Jackets player I'd want to stay in Columbus right now, well much more than going to Ottawa for example.

Ottawa has never been a favorite place to go for NHL players and considering how little the team has progressed in 4-5 seasons, it's going to be hard for Staios to attract good UFAs. We might be stuck with the classic good aging veteran (Perron) and the overpaid ordinary player (Amadio)

Heck, we had to give a 26 y/o D-man who already has 17 goals and 39 pts to get a good 34 y/o #4 D-man

Panthers just took on major salary without sending any out. Senators can’t even find a minor trade to improve the roster

Jones is going to be quite good on the Panthers, at 7.0 AAV

They should do Reinhart + Bennett for Tkachuk + Amadio, that would help them with their cap problems :sarcasm:

The 34 year old is a much better fit and is under contract next year. If we had kept Chychrun he may have had a great season but he’d be walking this summer.

Didn't matter who had/got Chychrun, with only 1 year left, it's all about whether or not you want to give him his upcoming long term contract and if he'd sign it, otherwise he's just a 1 year rental.

Chychrun would've stayed if we offered him what he wanted, but with the cap going up, dude can ask for $8 million and that's just not worth it for us unless we moved Chabot. Can't have your 3LD making $8 million. He was always a poor fit for the team unless he was able to excel on RD or unless Chabot was going to be moved.

What a shot by Knies, my favorite player on the Leafs (oh shit I am going to be accused of being a Leafs fan too )

It doesn't matter because from a business perspective it's a disaster no matter how you slice it. That is UNLESS the team could find some success with Jensen before he retires. Not sure if we'll even try to re-sign him after his contract.

The point is that it's very hard for Ottawa to attract good UFAs in their prime. Every ex-NHLer I heard talking about it said as such.

The discussion has shifted somehow but my initial post was not really about Chychrun but more that we had to PAY to get Jensen because if we could have signed an UFA, we could have then dealt Chychrun for picks and prospects only.

Well least you won’t be accused of being a Sens fan.

Why would someone posting on the Sens forum regularly for decades be "accused" of being a Sens fan? It doesn't make a freaking ounce of sense

It's amazing to witness this era and how some people are really losing it, like if posting about other players/teams in the thread "around the NHL" somehow makes you a worst fan or something. Totally ridiculous but frankly, I am amazed. Keep it up lol

Really hope we can make the playoffs even if it gets guys of Jensen's calibre to think we're good enough to sign with. Really need to start drawing in better quality FAs

Stutzle and Sanderson could be good arguments for some players because sometimes, players look at an opportunity to play with certain players. Example, you'd say "we're looking for someone to play on McDavid's wing", then players would LINE UP lol

But yeah, making the playoffs this year is CRUCIAL for Ottawa and for many reasons. My faith is not super high but I think we have some guys who could carry this team.

Florida just put Tkachuk on LTIR, freeing up a ton of cap space to add another player before the deadline.

Thought the condition on the 1st they gave to Chicago was interesting - it's the 2026 1st unless they trade it, in which case it gets pushed to 2027.

Same thing that Vegas did last year after trading for Hanifin. Pick got pushed a year after they also traded for Hertl.

Sounds like the Panthers could be going all-in this year (for what feels like the millionth time) and pulling the Vegas LTIR strategy.

Because you hurt his feelings and he and many other Sens fans have an inferiority complex whenever the Habs or Leafs are brought up.

I was in favour of trading for him, but in my defense I was sold a false bill of goods by Yotes' fans (mainly rt) that Chychrun was capable of playing either side

That was a lie. Dude never looked comfortable playing his off-side, and our pro scouts should have identified that from his time doing so in Arizona.

In hindsight I'm pretty pissed off that the rest of the league wasn't willing to give anything up for him. He wasn't a fit here but he was still a clear top 4 LD on a good contract for 24/25. Good for Washington and shame on the rest of the league really.

Homerism is too irrational for me to understand lol

I don't want the Habs/Leafs to win a Cup before Ottawa but in the end, it's just a freaking entertainment.
Your leaf takes are fair but you do tend to have an irrational fear/attachment to the the Habs.
