Around the League

They were missing key players like Dach and Guhle for long periods. Their #1 d is a rookie and their #1 prospect just arrived. Even with all that they finished ahead and are very competitive against the #1 seed.

people here have a weird tendency at times to assume tons of future growth for the Wings young players and prospects while at the same time being extremely reluctant to do the same for other teams in a similar position even if those teams are objectively younger and started their rebuilds more recently

12th overall for NIkishin.

Thing with this though is Russian agents (not sure his is) are known for overdoing a situation to try to make something work to their favour. So is this that, or are Carolina hard to deal with, not sure?

Not great defense but a goalie letting in a 1 handed knuckle puck? Yeesh.

And not even a hard powered one at that. When I saw that, I was like why won't Edmonton just get an actual goalie, instead of career AHL goalies and poor starters.

Red wings had an absolute train wreck season and finished within 4 points of them. They’re not good and neither are we. You’re not a good team unless you have home ice in the opening round. Long way to go for both teams

UMMM, What???? Colorado, New Jersey, Edmonton and Florida aren't good teams?

Woah, Dach is not a key guy at all.

Those are brutal stats for a guy who is basically a bust at this point. You could argue they miss the playoffs if he plays another 25 games at a -13 clip.

New Jersey is a good team???? They had 5 more points than us this year over the course of the season and have won a grand total of 6 playoff games in 12 years

Random question for the older folks here. I made the mistake of posting on the main boards (I know... I know) in the "Most Impactful Hits in NHL history" thread. Someone posted Stevens hit on Kozlov, which was impactful figuratively and literally, and a metaphor for the whole series.

But as people talked about it they kept referring to the Devils being massive underdogs. And how that series was effectively the shot heard round the world that started the Dead Puck Era.

I know the Wings were favored but my memory is it wasn't this massive David vs Goliath story as the Devils had come 1 goal away from the Cup Finals the previous season. That it was more of a skilled team (and a soft one it turns out) against a hard hitting defensive team.

It was a crushing loss and felt like the Wings were so far away from ever winning the Cup. But I don't remember this massive upset narrative.

Am I crazy? Am I remembering it wrong? (to be clear Im' only referring to my craziness on this issue).

I agree with your take. We hadn't won anything at that point, so while we may have been favoured, based on more big names, we certainly weren't tremendous favourites.

Wings had the best record in the league, by far. The Devils were 10th. Wings scored almost a full game per game more and were better defensively. Wings were pretty big favorites going in.

Wings were massive favorites, stating anything else is revisionist view. Devils were more or less in the same boat - a looser franchise, never won anything. But i‘m not sure this hit played any role media-wise. The narrative was defense beats offense, start of a dead puck era.

We were big favorites, similarly two years later Philly were favorites in a similar manner entering that series.

Yeah, in 1995 I seem to remember Detroit being favored over the Devils in the sense of having such a great regular season and people thinking that this was the year the Wings would finally break through. Skill would win out...and then the trap shut everything down.

Then the big tough Flyers were supposed to manhandle Detroit in 1997, but the Wings were just head and shoulders a better team.

Could it also be a case of Nikishin and his camp being hard to deal with? Is that why Nikishin hasn't come over yet?

I do wonder if the Kings end up bottling this series against the Oil whether Rob Blake will be in any hot water? Kings fans seem to despise him. He supposedly made some comment about feeling good about signing Gavrikov to a new deal, with the playoff meltdown and perhaps Blake being the fall guy that may open things up for Gavrikov.

They don't seem happy with both Blake and Robitaille. But Luc has that Yzerman job for life thing I would suspect.
