Around the League: You Like Mammoth?

Are we so jaded

From what I've read so far, the defense still hasn't contested the allegations that she was physically threatened with objects and prevented from leaving. That's literally the premise that would make the scenario a sexual assault. I'd be in fact worried for them that the line of questioning has been "well why didn't you reach for your phone for help" and "you looked like you were doing fine" because if that premise isn't going to be challenged, then even misidentifying who stayed in the room is beyond the point (i.e. for the police and courts to fix, not the victim).
To date based on what I’ve read, she was not physically threated and never prevented from leaving the room. She says she was coaxed into staying.

We’ll see what more comes out.

The golf clubs reference was related to apparently joking about putting them in her. But so she has not testified that she was treated with golf clubs.

That's nuclear-grade bad mojo that Rantanen is dropping on the Avs right now. Like potentially franchise altering. You've got to imagine the mood among Avs players and fans is sub-Canuck level. How will Sakic regain trust and reset the vibes? This miserable hockey fan will be watching with glee.
Well, that should have been an understanding from the team and Mack about how he would feel about others exceeding his cap since he took a lower number. This is going to be Mack's final long term deal, and he just took $100K more than McDavid. And Connor signed that deal like 2 years into Mack's last so it was 5 years in or so when Mack signed his current one.

If you then use that bar on others, in a rapidly rising cap, players don't wish to be held hostage if the market picks up.

hockey Canada trial update, some pretty big bombs were dropped yesterday.

Would read the live updates.

Of note, she misidentified 2 players, also had a boyfriend at the time of the assault. Says she kind of considers sex with McLeod cheating.

The players are Steel and Gadjovich’s.

Only wanted the players spoken to, decided to have it investigated and charges pressed when she was told they didn’t have to talk to police. Also said she wanted them to have some accountability.

Her credibility took a huge hit yesterday.
do you think what years was it:huh:
Anyway, you used the word "assault" already. It means you know assault did happen. Case closed.

This league never changes. Best sport, worst league.

None of these guys should be permitted to work in the league again, IMO.

It's one thing for the league to re-instate the guy, I don't necessarily agree or disagree with it, I don't know enough about JQ's involvement in the events...but why would a team bring in a guy with this kind of baggage? You're inviting someone with a sketchy past where he, at worst protected a sexual predator, and at best turned a blind eye to it...these are breaches of trust with a player. How do you expect players to trust and go to war with you after this? Would the players and staff have any respect for the guy? Would they work for him without any underlying resentments or distrust? As good a coach as he may have been in the past, I think these events have made him damaged goods and it seems very short sighted to even consider him at this point? It's not like there is a shortage of good people who can do the job without all the baggage.

if beach signed off on it then i'm alright with it. hope he didn't feel pressure / cave to any outside opinions and is actually coming from a place of forgiveness, but at least there's the premise of the ducks doing work here

tocchet being a final candidate but getting passed up is interesting. kind of funny too, tbh

It would be very amusing if Tocchet overplayed his hand and can’t get a new HC role.

He may have to take a rebuilding Boston Bruins job haha. Media made it sound as if TG was going to get a job quick as well and he had to wait a few years.

I think this Tweet sums up enough of his involvement to make my skin crawl.

While I do think Beach's feelings are of significant importance, I also feel like it's a bit of a cop out for the league. I can't imagine that's exactly a pressure-free situation for Beach to have the NHL call him up to seek his permission to hire people for prominent roles. What if he says no? What if that leaks? What if people attack him for it? I don't think it's a fair situation to put a victim in, and it's something that's been held up as a paper shield for both Stan Bowman and Joel Quenneville now - the two men who, arguably, had the most power to step in and protect Beach when this was happening and failed to do so. And their silence also lead to their being more victims. Were they consulted about this?

Again - I fully respect Kyle Beach's feelings and opinions. But it just feels wrong that they even go to him to ask. It shouldn't even be a question.

EDIT: Also, the whole report on the situation is available online, with "what the Blackhawks knew" beginning on Pg. 38: https://www.jenner.com/a/web/8kmbgF...icago-blackhawks-hockey-team-october-2021.pdf

To me the Beach thing is actually the secondary issue.

Like, it was pathetic and weak management but I could see where old-school hockey guys would have trouble believing an assistant coach somehow assaulted a 6'3 220 hockey player, and where they caved to the pressure and didn't handle things until after the playoffs. And I think the years away from hockey for Bowman were probably a fair enough punishment.

What Quenneville did is in a whole other universe. After this had all settled and they knew their video coach was a certified creep, in an effort to make the whole thing go away he wrote a glowing recommendation of a known predator *to a f***ing school* and then a child ended up being sexually assaulted as a result. It's just the height of moral bankruptcy and directly caused further crimes to occur (which the slow handling of the Beach issue did not). To me he should have been gone for life as a result.

Emily Kaplan's tweet says the Ducks spoke to Kyle Beach but doesn't specify what his response was.

If he gave a positive response wouldn't they run with that? They talked to him, he says "I don't care live me alone let me get on with my life" they can put out in the media they spoke to him.

Maybe I'm over thinking things.
