The Bennett hit on Stolarz wasn't particularly malicious, but it was obvious he made sure to make contact with Stolarz' head. It was dirty, and anyone denying it is delusional. Plus it's Sam Bennett so he shouldn't get the benefit of the doubt.

Now Toronto continues without their starter. And that was probably the worst two periods Florida are going to play in this series.

Looks like the witch-hunt was unsuccessful and Bennett will not face any supplemental discipline. totally unsurprising given the complete lack of severity of that play. It's stunning how little appreciation the pearl clutchers have for the speed of the game at ice level. Might have been a 2 minute minor in a mean nothing game, but that's about it. Listening to Nick Kypreos fulminating overt it was pretty funny though, given how that guy played the game.

Everyone is entitled to your opinion it seems

Wow. Very shocked to see Sid and Mack on the World's roster for Canada. Figured Mack would want a break with the 4N and losing in the PO. Sid, surprised cause of his age. Figure after all of the hockey he's played he would take a break in May so that he can mentally rest then come back to training in the summer.

Marner not looking like a playoff "choker" now

Meh, 7 games doesn't change much for the outlook of a player in regards to that when we have 10 seasons suggesting said individual is a choker. I just want to see Matthews/Marner to make it out of the 2nd round for once to even consider to think otherwise.

I completely agree, I think it was probably a penalty, but not suspension worthy. I think the puck to the head earlier probably did most of the damage. He was probably concuss thought he could keep going then that bump sent it into overdrive.

genuine question but how many goalies has gone out with concussions from shots?

I finally saw this replay... I think I have to agree with Brough here. I wouldn't object to an interference penalty in the moment (although if not for being suspicious of Bennett personally, it could also be seen as totally accidental/incidental), but the contact didn't look very forceful at all? It would have to rise to the level of a suspendable play and I guess I just don't see it?

I know that's no solace to Toronto fans... and I dunno, maybe the slo-mo replay doesn't do the true amount of force justice. But it does kind of look like an unlikely result from relatively basic contact.

That said, I think @bossram makes a good point here that even if not brutal, it's kind of a "what else are you trying to do here?" situation where Bennett doesn't have clean hands to protest.

My athletic feed has one canucks article and 4 bennet-stolarz -hit related articles on top, and I don't follow panthers or leafs on that platform. That place used to be good until NYT bought it and canned half of the writers, and now it's not really no longer worth the admission. Used to follow the small market teams there, which is no longer available there. And then you gotta scroll down quite a while before there's an article about the ongoing court case which in contrast is pretty grim

Oh and stuff like this is why I hope leafs eat dirt and get curb stomped in the 1st round annually.

Huh? Seems to me the elbow to the side of the head was the cause of the concussion, historically a far more damaging play than a puck to the mask.

I am looking at percentages...

How many hits happen in a game and how many players get concussions from them?

The point really is the framing of it is pretty stupid. Any hit to the head can cause a concussion, I have had one from being hit in the head with a puck (I played goal at the time) and another two from being body checked as a player. It can happen both ways.

I still think a lot goes undiagnosed
I also dont trust our medical line where a concussion begins

Bergervin in the mix for the LA jobs, please get it, please get it, please get it.
Bergervin was not nearly as bad of a GM as ppl think. I would have taken him over Rutherford. He is friends with Francisco so maybe he will come next after JR turns 100 years old

I'm beginning to wonder how serious and reliable some of Rick Dhaliwal's NHL contacts really are.

No sooner had an article surfaced on Canucks Army, quoting Dhaliwal, as claiming the Av's had serious interest in Tocchet--when the team announced that Jared Bednar was 100 percent returning to Denver as their coach next season.

That's about as fast a stake through the heart of an NHL trade rumor--as you can possibly get.

i think stolarz got his ear boxed. if you've ever been slapped square in the ear, it can cause concussion like symptoms from a relatively minor blow. that's why teachers used it as a punishment long ago. no inconvenient scars but you felt it.

Concussions . . .

First, it does not require a hit to the head to cause a concussion. Any hit which can cause the head to snap about can cause a concussion, although obviously less likely, the kind of hits (ie. no to the head) occur more frequently, so it certainly should not be ignored

Second, I haven't seen the shot that went off Seeingstarz mask - while any puck to the mask could potentially cause a concussion, people need to realize that the the goalie mask is designed as a wedge - pucks are meant to deflect off it, redirecting the energy away from the skull (ie. maintaining energy in the puck deflected at speed into the corner). However, right in the middel of the forehead of the goalie mask is a (basically) flat spot, take a puck there and there is essentially no wedge/deflection effect and the full brunt of the impact will go to the mask - and skull. This will also happen with shots to other parts of the mask if the goalie's head is turned, and the puck catches the side of the mask perpindicular

Third, I thought there was vid of Stolz giving a phantom handshake. A competent spotter would have noticed this and required a check. Not sure that this happened, would be pleasantly shocked out of my underpants if it was both noticed and the check was done. Obviously if the check was done, they effed it up

Fourth, when I payed hockey in the '70's and '80's, elbow pads had a hard piece of plastic within them, and then softer padding on the outside. However almost all the elbow pads I see on the store shelves for the past few decades have the hard plastic (or whatever the eff material) on the outside of the elbow pad making them a weapon. Why the rulebook allows this in not beyond me, I realize that the hockey people responsible for this make idiotic decisions more often than I can fart

And I eat a lot of beans

I mean, Marner has 59 points in 64 playoff games. The sample size is large enough at this point to say he's just the whipping boy when they lose. Crazy to see his hockeydb, he has never not made the playoffs in his entire career dating back to the OHL.

My dream off-season is him signing with the Canucks. He's so f***ing good.
