Around the League: You Like Mammoth?

The 2025 Kings look mentally boomed. This is like if the 2011 Canucks never got over the mental hurdle of the Blackhawks.

Losing four years in a row has to be so mentally draining as a fan, and even crazier as a player.

Also I know its going to be fashionable to be like lol Leafs, but that 3-0 series lead was built on a razor's edge with those two OT wins, so I'm not surprised its close.

Well, they make the playoffs. And completed a rebuild and return to competitiveness in less time than the Canucks bumbled around with DimJim.

Their rebuild was going great until they gave away Faber for Fiala (softest player in the playoffs) and followed it up by trading Durzi for nothing. Their depth up front was completely eroded with the PLD trade.

They are probably destined for another retool/rebuild soon.

Which is too bad because they really looked like they cracked the code with those two wins. Dumb mistakes have cost them, and they seemingly can't handle Edmonton's fastball anymore

LA made some critical errors that cannot be acceptable if they lose the series. That coaches challenge was unbelievable. Fireable offense, and if the GM doesnt fire the coach he should be gone too. The Byfield giveaway in game 4 with the goalie pulled is the other massive mistake

You cant give McDrai that kind of undeserved opportunity. They are truly generational players. So clutch in the playoffs, and LA making it so easy for them

I cant get over how good McDrai individually are in the playoffs in comparison to even Mackinnon. And of course to Matthews

I truly hope the Oilers crash out so those two guys go elsewhere so I can cheer for them and truly appreciate how excellent they are (whining and weiner behaviour aside)

A fair amount of chatter about Jon Cooper, who signed a one-year extension a year ago to take him through 25-26. One year seems odd...

Plugged-in individual has told me not to be surprised if he leaves TB to take over the operation in Utah, owned by close friend Ryan Smyth.

tbh i think LA has a very good group to build around. it is a bit like the canucks running into chicago every year (except the oilers aren't winning cups lol), but if LA ever matched up against, idk, the canucks... they would break the first round slump and probably be poised for a decent run.

kempe is a beast of a player that i'd love to have (should have drafted him over mccann smh). byfield is going to be a monster and every step that kopitar slows down, he gets better. same for clarke and doughty. they have solid guys like gavrikov, anderson and edmundson to prevent their defense from ever going full juulsen. added a vezina level goalie in kuemper that can at least keep them afloat for the rest of doughty and kopitar's career. solid middle-6 guys in danault, moore and foegele. fiala kind of sucks but i'd take him over boeser.

they're missing some true gamebreaking talent (unless byfield gets there) - the faber trade is crippling - but if they can use the kopitar/doughty cap space to add a gamebreaker via trade/free agency, i don't think they're too far away.

You forgot how TOR blew it again.

Still, I think statistically and objectively speaking, TOR still got their chances. If they actually blow the series 4-3 to OTT the city might just declare marshal law.
No marshal law is needed. Did they lose to MTL after 3-0 not long ago? If they blow it again, they should trade AM34 away. Unlike other stars, he has never have a star moment in a playoff series.

Cooper has been in Tampa for the last 13 years, he's not going to leave the US for Canada with the current state of affairs.

The best we are going to get is Manny Malhotra or an experienced coach that is looking to rebound his career like Tocchet. Especially given how broken the roster is right now.

Choice of HC should be based on team expectations. If they feel that they need to win and compete now, going to be tough to put that on a younger HC. So, wouldn't go with one that hasn't been coaching pros for at least 5 years, preferably at least 7/8.

Which team do TOR fans see as more of a rivalry though, MTL or OTT? I always thought it's OTT since it's within the same province.

I still think TOR is likely to take the series, but of course now it is going to be MUCH harder with a 3-2 series lead than 3-0.

OK, not the whole franchise, but the 2025 playoff Kings are playing a lot like the current Canucks.
Yeah but they still actually made the playoffs and executed that style more effectively. Credit to whoever runs the PP in LA as they actually took the risk on the 5 forward set-up and it's the best part of their game. No chance that would ever happen in VAN.

Yeah, in hindsight the Faber/Fiala trade was a loss for them. But Fiala has been a pretty good player all things considered. And by eye, he's created a lot for the Kings in this series. Everyone harps on the Byfield mistake in G4 (understandably), but minutes before Fiala hit the post which would likely have won them the game. He hit the post earlier too. He's created a lot of offense.

Some other bad moves hurt them too. Even if they have to retool again, they'll probably come out of his faster and still better than whatever the Canucks are gonna bumble around doing.

Also that's USD. Almost $50 CAD for that cocktail

The Kings are done in the series IMO. They have been manhandled at ES and Edmonton appears to have hit their stride (barf). Beyond this series, the organization is rapidly approaching a cross roads. Their two best players (ex Kempe) are ancient and have another year left together.....and I'm not a believer in Byfield and Clark as guys that are going to fill the void. It'll be interesting to see what they do this summer as they have a fair bit of cap space.

i was gonna say it's not that bad but i forgot that season ticket holders get a discount:

OTT's fans, players and owners believe their biggest rivalry is Tor and I highly doubt Tor fans care about OTT at all.
I also think Tor should take the series too, but I believe it will be a close series because OTT always play a lot harder when they vs tor. so, I will not be surprised OTT win the series at the end.
Haha, if OTT wins the series, does it mean green is a good coach?

Surely it’s Montreal.

If Victoria got an NHL team, think of how much work it would take for Canucks fans to feel more strongly about that team than Edmonton or Calgary. Then add in the original six mythology and the fact that Montreal has a trophy case of cups and Toronto has gone 58 years without one. I could go on, but you get the idea.

Utah is up and coming, but their best guys don't match up to Kuch, Point, Stamkos, Hedman, Vasi in their prime. Keller, Guenter, Cooley are good. Keller at this point is what he will be.
But, Cooper may be in line for a change since TB seems to be running on fumes of their best guys as they don't have the depth anymore.

Ottawa cares about Toronto much more than vice versa.
Toronto cares about Montreal much more than vice versa.
Montreal only cares about Boston.

Toronto does like to razz Ottawa fans about being unimportant/uncool though (having lived in both, I much prefer Ottawa by the way).
