didn't realize Andrei Svechnikov performed so poorly this season. 20 goals 28 assists.

Florida has just four drafted players on its current roster, debunking the myth that drafting well is the only way to build a successful team. It proves franchises can thrive through trades, free agency, and player development.
The main takeaway from Florida's success is that if you can consistently be the best GM in the league, or top 2, every single year for a handful of years, you can build a successful team through any avenue and starting from any position.

Last its going up by 5.5 million.

well when Lou signed that deal, he knew he wasn't gonna be on long Island for the duration of the 8 years. Basically he did whatever he can to win the cup while he can. Similar to what Jimmy rutherford is doing.

Ekblad 1st overall
Barkov 2nd overall
Tkachuk 6th overall
Reinhart 2nd overall
Bennett 4th overall

being able to bring this many top picks should be illegal. Luckily for them they had acquired picks and drafted players like hubey(top3) to trade.

This panthers team still had to tank before being able to pull this off.

I have a bad record for picking the Cup winner at the start of the playoffs each year, but I can say that I've never picked Carolina to win the Cup. I've never understood the high regard they've been given for the last few years.

Don't forget 7th overall Malhotra and 5th overall Torres :sarcasm:

also Ballard 11, Hamhuis 12, and Higgins 14
I thought someone looked at this awhile back and large majority of the players at the top are 1st rounders. So if you are a contender, odds are most of the stars are top picks.

Friedman reported that there was a Marner - Rantanen trade in the works but Marner refused to waive.

So yeah wouldn't count on him going there.
I believe his wife was expecting around that time; good chance he wouldn't have wanted to move anywhere at the deadline.

Otherwise Carolina is a pretty good destination to join a competitive team, get a big bag of money, and avoid the scrutiny of choking in the playoffs (but a little further in).

Even after hamstringing yourself with a massive goalie contract.

While being completely supported by the higher earning teams of the league while floundering for decades. Good timez

Meh, 3 of them were distressed assets gotten from trades (Reinhart, Bennett, now Jones).

They really hit the nail on the head with the first 2 becoming core pieces. Reinhart was a Boeser level player (better skater but still not the best) and Bennett was trending towards being a Nic Dowd type of 4C.

I was never very bullish on this version of the Carolina Hurricanes.

And it starts in the front office. They gave up a bushel-full of assets to acquire Rantanen; and then realized they couldn't sign him; and flipped him to Dallas. In my mind that probably caused almost as much disruption in the room, as the Miller-Pettersson rift in Vancouver.

Right now the 'Canes are being forced us two rookie d-men on their back end, and they're getting eaten alive on the forecheck by the experienced Panthers. In goal, Freddie Andersson has cratered; so they're being forced to use another rookie between the pipes.

How did this happen? I think at this point, Vancouver might have just as good a future as they have. If I was the Carolina GM, I'd be burning up the phone lines trying to acquire Demko from the Canucks.
